Re: 4x4 challenge 27 feb 2010
I can tell you that this challenge was very tough. I did only 5 of the 10 obstacles as they were nearly impossible and you had a 100 % chance of breaking your vehicle ( and a few did break )

Re: Common problems with SFA HiLux?
Well mine is a 1988 model with 4 Y engine. My brother bought it new in 1988. I bought it from him 5 years ago. Speedo standing at 384000 km currently. The only problems experienced is as follows: ( FROM NEW ) 1. Fuel pump packed up 2 years ago 2. Powersteering pump replaced on 380000 km 3. Heater ra...

Front Axle Pot
On the front axle where the wheel swivel there is what I know the "pot" with a filler plug on top. With what do you fill this pot and how much ? Is it grease or oil ? I believe this is where the cv joint is situated. I am planning to replace all the seals and bearings and just wanted to kn...

TYRE SIZES
My Hilux is nearly due for new tyres. Currently it's fitted with 30 9.5R15 BFG All terrain. I want to fit something bigger and looked at BFG Mud terrains in 32 11.5 R 15. I was told that my vehicles engine ( standard 4Y ) will be a little to underpowered for this size. I also will be fitting OME Sus...

Re: Power Steering pump
When you have taken off the pump start by splitting it. Now you will found the rotor inside. Just be very careful as this rotor has loose little plates ( vanes) that can get lost easily. On the side where your banjo bolt fits you will see a fitting that can be unscrewed as well. If you take out this...

Re: Power Steering pump
Mine has done 240000 km. No special tools are required. Only a medium size circlip plier and a few spanners will do the job

Re: Power Steering pump
The turning on my SW is very light. The kitt consisted only of o rings, main seal and circlips. I used normal ATF in mine. If you are going to recon the pump yourself just post a reply and I will explain to you the one little hassle.

Re: Power Steering pump
My power steering pump also started making funny noises about 2 weeks ago. I was quoted R 2813.52 for a new pump from the agents. I then took off the pump to see if I could get a pirate pump somewhere else. Well with the pump removed I saw that at the rear there was a sligt leak of oil. I then got a...

Diff Locks
I would like to fit diff lock on my front and rear diffs. It is the imported diffs. What I would like to know is what make is the best and what is the cost involved in such a operation. Also can this be done by myself or do a specialist need to do this.

Re: brakes
Luke From what I can understand the probable cause of this poor braking can be that the linings and brakepads are glazed. This normally happens when the pads and linings are old and they get very hard with a kind of glazed skin on them. I had the same problem with one of my trucks. The vehicle did n...

Drivetrain oils
Just a few questions in general concerning the drivetrain
1. Is the diff ratio's on the imported and local diffs the same on a SFA?
2. What grade of oil is used in the rear and front diffs on a SFA ?
3. What grade of oils is used in the transfer and gearbox on a SFA ?

Re: Petrol to diesel change
No problem with the 4 Y as it has done 270000 km and does not use a drop of oil. Tyre sizes are 30 9.5 15 BF Goodrich. I did however found that the fuel pump was overfueling and has replaced it. Yes I will for certainly keep the 4 Y in and has already sold the 3 C engine again. If you could give me ...

Re: Petrol to diesel change
Ja nee. I have thought about all the modifications that needs to be done and it does not seem wort while. I will now rather stick with my 4Y and refurbish my carburator and maybe fit some branches and a freeflow also.

Petrol to diesel change
Hi there. I have a 1989 Hilux 4X4 DC with the original 4Y motor in. I have purchased a Toyota 3C Turbo Diesel motor that I want to build in. Could somebody tell me if this is a good idea as everybody speaks well of the 4Y. Ialso would like to know if my current diff ratio will be ok for this engine....
