Africa East Coast Data - budget, route & GPS waypoints

Hi guys We just got back from our round-Africa trip, up the East coast from SA to Egypt, round through Europe (unfortunately still cant drive through Algeria and Libya was still quite dodgy), back onto the mother Continent at Morocco, and all the way down the West coast back to SA in our awesome 199...

Hilux Specialist in UK

Hi,

We are almost in UK. Does anyone know of a Hilux Specialist in UK that can check out our Hilux before we start down the West Coast?

I am also looking for someone that can reset the rear suspension.

The Hilux has been very impressive.

Thanks
Brett

Re: Gearbox jumping out of gear + gearbox oil change advice

thanks all for the advice. mud dog was right, it now feels like a brand new gearbox. the part was $10 and very easy to replace. the spring clip was easy with the above description. 10 minute fix, but 1 hour to explain to toyota what the part is. handbrake part was chewed going around drum when loose...

Re: Gearbox jumping out of gear + gearbox oil change advice

Thanks guys. I removed the lever and took out the spacer. The spacer is broken (pictures below). I am going to try replacing this for now before I look into the syncro. The broken spacer would explain the symptoms - most of the time the gearbox is working well, but sometimes something is preventing ...

Gearbox jumping out of gear + gearbox oil change advice

Hi, I'm having a problem with the gearbox on my 1994 SFA Hilux...its popping out of gear sometimes, mostly when in 3rd, with not much load but sometimes under load. It occasionally happens in 4th now as well. When you push it into 3rd gear it feels like there are 2 clicks to get it fully into gear. ...

Re: Africa Trip

I have spoken to a few people and it seems that I was unlucky with the Benton - they generally seem good. I think I would go with the BX2 next time as it would take less time to charge the batteries.

Re: Correct tyre pressure: BFG 31X10.5x15?

Wow, quite a range. I have had recommendations of 1.2 off road, 1.6 on dirt and 1.8 on tar, but the tar pressure seems low. What are the recommendations for best fuel consumption/tyre wear of BFGs on tar with a loaded vehicle (I can survive a hard ride)?

Re: The fuel consumption of my Hilux

Hilux 2.2 4Y, 219000km, Brospeed Carb and manifold Aluminium canopy, permanent roof racks, raised suspension, BFG A/T Fuel consumption seems to stay around 6.6 km/l for urban and motorway (110km/h). I did manage 7.2 km/l once on dirt roads (90km/h). Does anyone know what to expect on overland trips ...

Re: Africa Trip

It is hard to say where the start is. Was it Bloem where we bought the vehicle, CT where we are today or Joburg where we install the tent. Anyway, we should leave SA in about 3-4 weeks time - first stop is Zim. The vehicle is getting closer to ready - still a few things to do and then to figure out ...

Can anyone recommended a mechanic in Joburg

Hi All, Can anyone recommend a mechanic in Joburg? I am looking for someone experienced with the Hilux/4Y, preferably someone who would be willing to show me what they are doing so I can learn. Bought COREFLY's Hilux 94 4x4 2.2 4Y. It needs a general service and check over, gearmax diff lock not wor...

Africa Trip

Hi All, This forum has really helped with choosing our vehicle and planning for our trip - 52,000km around Africa, up the East Coast and and back down the West Coast - it should provide a good story and many good photos of the Hilux in action. We have bought Mitch's Hilux 2.2 SFA. Can anyone recomme...
