URI
A while back I read obout a vehicle called a Uri. They were built by a farmer in Namibia. He took engines, gearboxes and diffs from Toyota SFA's and built a type of sandmaster with them. These vehicles were popular with mining company. I believe they are in use with a touring company as well. Is there anyone on the Forum that has seen a Uri in action.

Re: URI
Morning Landy, and welcome to the forum. I remember there was a Carte Blanche story about this as well, but cannot remember much more. Seemed quite a capable vehicle at the time.

Re: URI
G'day everyone
There was one of these running around Stellenbosch about 2 years ago - guess it belonged to a Namibian student. Looked like an extremely capable vehicle. I remember some of the chassis and suspension components were made from thick reinforced iron rods - straight from a building site - held together with very beefy welds.
Found this URL to the story of them closing down in Namibia:
http://www.namibian.com.na/2004/august/ ... 00CE1.html
And another one profiling the guys who are now building them in Pretoria:
http://free.financialmail.co.za/innovat ... 6/binn.htm
They have (had) a website: http://www.uri.co.za, but that seems to be down

Hi Guys
While camping this weekend there was one there at the camp site. Lee-Ann's friends dad has one of these vechiles and it is for sale I think he wants about R95 000 for it it looks like it is in good condition. As far as I can see it is a 2x4 with diff lock looks like a gearmax diff dont know what engine it has. Let me know if anyone is intrested.

Re: URI
Ja, My brother in law and his family have farms close to Stampriet and all they use are URIs. They became very scares. There are people who tried to build a similar thing, but it is just not the same.
Even the 2wheel drive version runs the dunes like a little beach buggy.
They have a small load bin which makes it ideal for hunting.
Because it is all Toyota below, they are ultra reliable.

Re: URI
The story I heard is that the original Namibian German owners sold the concept to South Africans and after that it was never the same again. These original URIs still reach crazy prices in Namibia IF you can find one.

Re: URI
I am wondering where are they getting all the parts from? Most probely importing them from Japan, a few years back, maybe two, we approached them about been able to just buy the body with the interior, we would fit our own axles and drive train, however they said no, thus this is why we are busy manufacturing our own 4x4 vehicle also using Hilux components, along the same lines, but with our own ideas and mods.

The newer ones certainly do look quite nice. Does anybody know what engines they are using? Petrol? Diesel? I should hope it's the 4Y engine, but probably not
