Not a Hilux, but still a Toyota.

The fuelpump of the Avanza with the fuel filter is as far as I could get in the fuel tank itself. Is there an inspection hole through the floor or must one drop the fuel tank?

It is very strange for me that Toyota would install a service item inside the petrol tank in such a manner that the tank needs to be dropped in order for it to be replaced. Normally there would be a strainer of some sorts in the petrol tank that would keep the biggest particles out of the pump. There has to be another petrol filter somewhere. Follow the fuel line from the engine to the tank and see if there is one in line. I suspect that may be the case.

usually on a Toyota you would remove the rear seat and can then access the fuel filter and pump. The Avanza should be the same
