220V to 12V??

Post by DustySFA »

Hi Guys,

is there anyway to add a 12V socket to a 220V device without going the expensive inverter route.

swambo has asthma and we plan on going up sani pass in 2 weeks, at that altitude she might need her nebulizer, 220V...

how can i convert that to 12V without buying an expensive inverter...

might be a stupid question for some, but i am no electrical techie...

Believe or not the inverter may be the cheaper and easiest route, you should be able to pick up a decent 300W inverter for around R600. Just check the consumption of the nebuliser.

The 12V from your battery is direct current (DC) and the motor that drives the nebuliser needs Alternating Current (AC). You should be able to get a 12DC motor to replace the 220V AC one with, but that will mean modifying the nebuliser. The upside of this is that it is easier and cheaper to rectify and smooth 220V AC to 12V for home use than the other way around.

Inductive motors normally don't like running on the modified square wave of the cheaper inverters. (The more expensive ones put out a genuine sine wave as needed by inductive motor.) But I don't think it will do harm to run a low power inductive motor from a modified square wave inverter for short periods.

I can check our nebuliser on the inverter for you - my wife is also asthmatic.

As Willem says: Inverter, our nebulizer only draws 0.6 Amp so I will require a 200 - 300 Watt inverter.

I have one should you not want to purchase one

You might be lucky and the nebuliser is already fitted with a 12v DC motor running of an internal transformer / rectifier ... have you opened it to check? Then all you have to do is fit a 12v DC input.

I took a look last night and i see it draws 1 Amp.

It manager here at work said he might have an old UPS lying around that has been scrapped cvause the batteries are shot. 3Kva UPS. 2500W, little modification and then i got a 2500W inverter...will run it direcrly off my second battery when needed, and then remove it when not in use.

what you guys think?

Just check that the UPS can run of 12V which I doubt, most of the bigger computer UPS's uses 2 or 4 batteries in series to give you 24 or 48 Volt on the DC side. So it wil not be able to run of only a one 12 Volt battery. Most of the server UPS's that we use runs of 48V DC ie 4 12V batteries in series.
