T Max dual battery system
Does anyone have one of these installed? How does it compare to the National Luna DBS?

Re: T Max dual battery system
go the NL route, buy all the parts yourself seperate from Outdoor warehouse or somewhere like that and do it yourself, very easy...the intelligent solenoid is R680, the duel LED display for cab is about R400 I think, then the deep cycle battery R 1000 ish, ali box, freezer plugs, hella plugs or whatever your requirements are, heavy duty cabling etc, inline fuses, then its just a case of running cables from one side of the solenoid to the veh batt, then the other side to the deep cycle battery, I had mine fitted professionally but in hindsight and looking at it I could have done it myself and saved a lot of money....my intelligent solenoid has lasted over 7 years, only now broken due to excessive water in the engine bay offroading etc, mud and that, I am putting a new one in and going to relocate it higher up onto the firewall etc. but have been very happy with it, before it broke I just bypassed the intelligence board on the unit and just ran it direct, not ideal I know but it worked all the same until I replace with the new one.....if you do it yourself you get to put everything, run all the cables exactly where you want them....

Louis, ek het Junie laas jaar 'n kwotasie gekry vir R 4 250, incl. Dit sluit 'n battery en installasie in. Dit sal seker nou al 'n bietjie duurder wees.4x4megaworldpta wrote:How much is the Nat luna battery system installed complete?

so it is R3700 against R3900 en you sit back watch? or is it R2500 incl the battery of R1200?
cause i just installad mine for R 830 for intelligent solenoid + single battery monitor without alarm. Cable 15m @ R30/m and has 4m left. so that is R450 and the lugs etc prob another R100 for klein akkies. plus battery R1100.

Re: T Max dual battery system
I had a look at both systems and desided to go cheap and nasty ...not because I am ingat but could'nt see any real value in the monitoring device. I would have liked the timedelay function to protect my main battery when stopping and starting a-lot but will make a plan for a own built device soon.
So as far as cost goes R180 for the solenoid, R50 for 50a fuses R50 for 2 m 16mm wire, built the bracket for under bonnet fitting self R20 for material. and R1500 for 105AH battery
The proof was in the puding on my Bots visit where I camped without recharge for 4 days running a 40l NL fridge at-5 degree 24/7 as well as LED lights at night and still had more than 11A in the battery.
I would rarely stay more than 4 days while overlanding so this worked for me, I would not recomend 1) having it fit and 2 spending so much forsomething you do not need

Re: T Max dual battery system
Thanks for the replies guys.
Unfortunately, I really suck at doing things like this myself , so I will gladly pay someone like Louis a couple hundred quid to install it for me. Also, I would like to fit it in the engine bay, which makes it even more difficult (at least for someone like me).

Your system seems very "cheap" but on the other side very effective. I presume that you used the cole hersee (#p24059) solenoid for this purpose?
I have attached two pictures, one of normal CH solenoid and the NL intelligent solenoid. The NL one I believe is basically a CH solenoid with a delay function, voltage cut out etc.
Can someone please explain where/how the 2 small points (A & B) of the CH solenoid should be connected? (I have searched the forum but alas I could not find anything (read pictures) of how to connect it). My understanding is that when the CH solenoid is correctly connected it will start charging the aux bat as soon as the ignition is on. It will also isolate the aux battery (ie not drawing any current from the main battery) when the engine is not running?
The NL seems very straight forward to connect as illustrated below: The NL system on the other hand has a built in voltage cut out switch, thus both batteries are utilised whilst the engine is not running but the main one (cranking battery) is disconnected as soon as the low voltage point is reached?
Much has been said about split systems but I seem to get lost in the technical details . Can someone please shed some light on the above ? (I am sure I am not the only one...)
Re: T Max dual battery system
Gerbrand, the Point B gets connected to the Main battery +positive and Point A to the positive terminal of the Secondary / Aux battery.
When your vehicle is started the solenoid has a built in timer of 5 mins and if the Primary battery does not have 13.8volt in or is not charging at 13.8 volt, the solenoid will not charge the secondary / Aux battery.
When the ignition is switched off. the timer has a 5 min delay and will then isolate the secondary / aux battery from the main battery, therefore avoiding any drainage from the main battery.
Well worth the cost

Re: T Max dual battery system
The ideal would be to have a + source that only gets power once the engine has fired and is running. IOW not when the ignition switch in in the ON position. This will allow for the engine to be running before the CH solenoid closes the circuit between the 2 batteries, and prevent draining the main battery into the (possibly) flat auxiliary battery, preventing the vehicle from starting.
In that case, terminal A will be connected to the + source as stated above, and terminal B to ground. These purpose of these 2 terminals are to actuate the solenoid. Shoudl the + source wire be very thin, another relay should be wired in to supply power to terminal A.
Once the engine gets switched off the power is cut to terminal A therefore isolating the 2 circuits.
The NL system is much easier to wire, and does all the thinking for you though..

Hey, got it installed (eventually). Decided in the end to go for the Luna system with a Deltec deep cycle. Very professional job done by LA Sport. Watch thread for pics.
