Difference between "CB" and 29MHz radios? - HELP!

Post by Polarbear2008 »

We are (if all goes well) on a tour in the June school holidays. All of the other drivers currently have what was known as "CB" radios.

I have both VHF and 29MHz and would like to confirm something. Am I correct in assuming that CB was on the 27MHz range and that my GME GX-300 would have to be reset to be able to work on that frequency (as I understand that it can be set for 27 or 29 MHz)? Or does the fact that there are 16 channels and then (I think) 4 channels starting with "P" mean that the "P" channels are for 27MHz?

Thanks for any feedback.

EDIT: on mine's box there is a sticker that reads "29MHz South African Version". Does this mean it cannot do 27MHz? The previous owner used it on this boat, so I am inclined to believe it should be able to do 27 as (As far as I know) boats use 27 don't they?

My frigid friend,

It can be programmed to operate on either 27 or 29Mhz, or both. Remember, you require appropriate licences for both frequencies. In this case, we program the radios for the 29MHz channels and then P1-P9 for the nine legal 27MHz channels.

Remember that you also need the correct 27 or 29MHz antenna respectively for maximum efficiency and to minimise any chance of possible damage to the radio.

Thanks Eric!

Any idea what the "CB" frequencies were "in the old days" ?

Reason for my question is that I can make sure that these are correctly programmed.

Which would be the right antenna for 27 mhz? I have a 29 MHz one (think it is a ZARA60??)

Theunis, these are the permissible CB frequencies for use in SA. In the case of the GX300, P1 would equal Ch 19 and so on. Obviously, the GX300 cannot operate on SSB so it will be programmed for normal AM mode.

Ch.19 - 27.185 MHz - AM - AM Calling Channel
Ch.20 - 27.205 MHz - AM - General Purpose
Ch.21 - 27.215 MHz - AM - Emergency use / Road Directions
Ch.22 - 27.225 MHz - AM - General Purpose - Mostly use by Caravan Clubs
Ch.23 - 27.255 MHz - AM - General Purpose
Ch.24 - 27.235 MHz - SSB - General Purpose
Ch.25 - 27.245 MHz - SSB - General Purpose
Ch.26 - 27.265 MHz - SSB - General Purpose
Ch.27 - 27.275 MHz - SSB - SSB Calling Channel

The Zara29 looks like a Zara60 from the base to the spring, but the whip is 1.5 metres in length and includes a black plastic encased coil towards the bottom of the whip. For more details, refer the attachment.

Eric,
I see on the spec it says wind velocity is 220Km/hr. Would that be as you open the bag and if so how long does the wind last? What do I need to recharge the wind. Will the wind always blow at 220Km/hr. Can you regulate the flow of the wind? Which is the best direction for the wind to blow? Does the antenna have to be attached for the wind to blow at 220Km/hr? If my vehicle can only just do 140Km/hr, will it improve with the installation of this antenna?
Just because it says "4WD" doesn't make it an off-road vehicle.

Pretty fast for a plastic bag, eh! ;)

A Hilux owner would probably not even notice the speed at which that bottled wind travels, but it is advisable to stand upstream of the bag when you open iot to prevent the "Gone with the Wind" feeling...
