DBS Different approach
As most of you know I am Luxless at the moment and will probably be so for the next year or 2
Any hows I am already starting to plan my new rig. One thing that did bother me was my Dual battery system. It worked great but it was doing all the work while driving and in the day when driven the solar panel did nothing because the controller take the feed from the alternator when the motor is running. Unfortunately I could not switch of the DBS because I only had a 85watt panel and that was not enough.I had to use the DBS.The DBS was basically a Cole Hersee solenoid.
So my thinking now is to have enough solar panels.Lets say 240watt for know.At the moment I am thinking to get the Cristy's RTT.http://www.cristys.co.za/rooftoptents2.htm Then I can mount the SP on that. These plans change daily
The idea is that I will have a decent Solar Controller and that the majority of the time the second battery will be charged by the Panels.I will have a DBS for the times when the panels are not getting enough sunlight. But the DBS will be the secondary and not the primary means of charging.
Probably my main reason is that while I was touring under the lovely African sun I was not using the suns(free) power.Only when I switch of the car.I also did some test and there was definitely a fuel saving when the DBS was switch off. Although this is not my main concern.
So what is your views on this setup?

Or you can simply install a DC to DC charger. It normally goes on the "ON" wire so that it only charge when vehicle is switched on, but you can also add an extra switch to switch it off. So when the sun is enough you just switch off the DC to DC charger with one simple switch and let the panels do the work.

Re: DBS Different approach
that is the idea, but my thinking is because it is only a secondary means. No actually 220volt will be secondary so the DBS will be third inline I can save by not going the DC/DC route.Or can he DC/DC also do 220volt?pietpetoors wrote:Or you can simply install a DC to DC charger.
