Garmin spares

Post by Mikie »

I seem to recall someone here being an agent for Garmin or something like that, Family_Dog? maybe you?

I have a Nuvi 760, it has dropped off my windscreen one time too many and then dangled there by the cables, so I now have what I suspect is a faulty cable on it, it doesnt make proper contact onto the plug point in the mount, where can i get a replacement cable? Or possibly even get the cable and mount tested to determine which is faulty.
My units battery is also toast, it lasts all of 10 seconds and then dies, can that be replaced too?

If a replacement cable costs me R100 why should I replace the unit?
Yes its old but it works, I have tried using my Android phone and it works too but its not as user friendly as my trusty old Garmin

I tried using the USB Port, no go, it charges the unit but puts it into Computer mode, so it basically waits for a computer connection, cant see maps

If it goes on and charges then you know its your cable that is giving you troubles :frustrated: :frustrated:

Nope different cable and port, The suction mount has a port that the cable connects into, not a USB Cable, The usb port is on the unit itself

Thanks Stef, thats exactly it, however $35 translates to more than R350 and that excludes shipping :shock2:
I was hoping to find something locally. For that price its just not worth it, I will then try permanently attach the cable to the mount

Avnic Trading is the official Garmin Repair Centre
They will tell you exactly the condition of the unit, and then offer you both a repair and a trade-in option

Mikie, we do Garmin GPS products now and then but updating people's units has sort of switched me off Garmin - it's a time-consuming mission. But we can certainly order the necessary cable, although my suggestion also is to take it to Avnic, if you're lucky you might even get a free battery (actually, they replace the unit with a "serviced" one). I posted the Nuvi 710-760 battery problems on the forum a while ago. Basically, if your unit falls within a certain range of serial numbers they replace the unit FOC.

If they offer you a trade in, see what you can get a Montana 600 for - that is one magnificent GPS and well worth the $$.

Here, found it:

viewtopic.php?f=14&t=13926&hilit=nuvi+710+recall" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Not sure if the serial number goodie still works but certainly worth asking Avnic about this. The old battery had an affinity to catching alight if over-charged.

Edit: It does work, I just no longer have a 710/760 with which to test it. Holding thumbs for you!

All sorted, my mount and the cable were dead, bought a Garmin USB power cable, plugs straight into the USB Port without putting it into Transfer mode, R100.
I asked about the battery recall and he said, nope there was nothing on my model, not sure if he was bullshitting or if he meant my serial number model.

For the clever guys out there, how do the newer Garmin models work? Do maps still expire? Or is there any lifetime maps option? It grates me having to rebuy maps every year or 2, I could gladly stay on an old version as the upgrades arent that major locally, problem I have is that I cant install Mapsource on my laptop if my maps are out dated, or can I??
