Have a 120 series Prado with a 4 speed auto box and 1KD engine.

When it is driven on steep slopes going uphill the AT light comes on. Usually within 15 minutes of it climbing. Engine has plenty of power but light comes on. It very annoying and have to wait 5 to 10 minutes for it to cool. Then it comes on again within 5 minutes of continuing on the uphill.

Is this normal? Fluid was changed but still the same problem. Why would Toyota make a 4x4 that cannot go up steep hills.

Any help or insight would be appreciated.

Thanks

You are driving that auto incorrectly by leaving it in D. Put the selector in 3rd or 2nd. The torque converter only locks up in 3rd and 4th.

check your AT fluid level. If the fluid level is not correct it will also overheat. This needs to be checked with the vehicle running and up to temp.

ATF temperature:
70 to 80° C (158 to 176° F)

Park the vehicle on a level surface and set the parking brake.

With the engine idling and the brake pedal depressed, move the shift lever into all positions from P to L. Then return it to P.

Pull out the dipstick and wipe it clean.

Push it back fully into the pipe.

Pull it out and check that the fluid level is in the HOT range.
If there are leaks, it is necessary to repair or replace O-rings, FIPG, oil seals, plugs or other parts.

If fitted with a 1KD engine it will most properly have a 5speed box in. Fit a oil cooler or larger one to the gearbox
