4x4 Bootcamp - Advanced Driver Training

by ThysdJ
African Offroad Academy Western Cape is presenting a 4x4 Bootcamp at Klein Tafelberg on 11/12/13 November 2011.

What is this all about?
The bootcamp will consist of a series of challenges and obstacles to test and train drivers the advanced techniques and skills of off-road driving. While the drivers complete their tasks they will be assessed in terms of Unit Standard 254154 - Advanced Offroad Vehicle Operator. Exact details of the challenges and tasks will be revealed at the venue and as we go along. It will also be done on a competition basis with points being awarded to get the competitive spirit going. We are planning a navigational stage, a night driving stage, some winching, road building, advanced recoveries, bush mechanics and more.

Accommodation/Catering
The group will be camping at Klein Tafelberg in their very well appointed camp site. For those who prefer to have a chalet, this can also be arranged. Catering will be provided, but teams will be expected to display their bush-cooking skills to prepare meals on a rotational basis.

Duration
The course takes place over 3 days, starting on Friday 11 Nov at noon. This means that participants will have to arrive at Klein Tafelberg during the morning of 11 Nov to set up camp and settle in. We will carry on until Sunday afternoon when participants will be handed some practical assignments to complete at home and hand in for final assessment.

Costs
We are still in the planning phase, but the costs for accreditation in accordance with US254154 is R2500 excluding accommodation and catering. Final costs will be communicated once finalised.

Prerequisites
Participants must be TETA accredited drivers in terms of US 254135 - Offroad Vehicle Operators.
Vehicles must be equiped with recovery points (2 front and 2 rear), recovery gear, fire extinguishers and basic tools.

Due to the intensity of the training and the limited time, we'll have to limit the number of entrants. It will be handled on a first-come-first -served basis. This is also not limited to Capeys, if you are interested and prepared to travel, you are more than welcome to join us.

Be prepared for a weekend with lots of sweat and hard work. As a reward you will be able to proudly display your Advanced Driver certificate behind your bar-counter, knowing that you are one of only a handful of Advanced Drivers in the good ole RSA.

The venue has changed. We are negotiating with Boegoeberg4x4 to present the boot-camp there. I will post some more details as we hash it out. Date is fixed on 11/12/13 November, unfortunately the same weekend as the CIF/AAWDC Fun day at Melkbos4x4.

I dont know about you guys but I am seriously looking forward to this.

After many meetings and planning sessions we are ready to formally announce this Boot Camp. The venue is back at Klein Tafelberg mainly for logistic reasons, and availability of facilities. Please drop us an email at training@enjoy4x4.co.za if you are interested in attending, or for further information.
Here's a nice challenge for you!

It is our great pleasure to invite you to the African Offroad Academy Advanced Driver Boot Camp. Attending the Boot Camp will get you trained and assessed as an Advanced Offroad Vehicle Operator (US254154). The activities will be very much practically orientated, so look forward to a busy weekend, getting down and dirty. Some theory will be discussed, but not as much as in the previous course. We will be "bush" camping at Klein Tafelberg near Redelinghuys in the Sandveld, where your camping etiquette and bush cooking skills will also be put to the test. Klein Tafelberg also offers one of the more technical 4x4 trails in the Western Cape, where your driving skills will be tested and assessed. Be alert all the time as surprise stages can pop up from time to time to test your abilities even more. You will be working in teams, so buddy work is very important.

Due to time constraints we have to limit the number of entrants to 16. Therefore your entries will be handled on a "first-come-first-served" basis. Not to worry though, those who cannot be accommodated on this boot camp will have an automatic entry in the next one which will be held in the first half of 2012, before the Western Cape winter sets in.

Some Details:

When and duration
The training course will take place over 3 days, starting on Friday 11 November at 12:00 (High Noon) sharp. You will be required to arrive at the venue from 10:00 onwards and then to set up camp and settle in before we start. We have quite a full program, so we suggest getting settled before we start with the activities as we will be going on until way after dark on Friday night. The last activities should end around about lunch time on Sunday, after which you can break up your camp and go home.

Where
Klein Tafelberg 4x4 trail in the Sandveld. This trail offers all the required conditions to put your 4x4 driving skills to the test, as well as facilities to keep the rest of the family occupied while you are having a 4x4 time. There is also a nice pool to cool off in after a day's hard work, and fantastic camping facilities. Our in-house cateres will treat us to a fantastic meal on the Saturday evening, just to give us all a chance to rest weary limbs and have a cold foamy one or two. The rest of the meals will be prepared by yourselves in order to demonstrate your bush-cooking skills.

Prerequisites:
Unfortunately this training is only open to those members of African Offroad Academy who have already achieved competence against US254135.
Your vehicle MUST have low-range and must be equiped with proper recovery points front and rear

What will you do
You will be trained and assessed on US254154 - Apply the ADVANCED techniques of operatinging a 4x4 vehicle in on and off-road conditions.
The weekend will be broken up in stages, where you and a team of mates, will be set certain tasks. We will also have a little competition going so some of the tasks will be done against time, and the team with the most points win. Scoring will be transparent and you will always know where you stand in the competition. Tasks will range from
4x4 various driving obstacles
Recoveries
Bush Camp etiquette
Bush Cooking
Bush Mechanics
Bush Medics - Harry Stein will come and do a presentation on First Aid
Tyres - You will do some tyre maintenance where and when you least expect it
Vehicle readiness ITO equipment, accessories and maintenance
Safety safety safety
Teamwork and co-operation
Day and night Navigation

What must you bring?
Pack for a 3 day camping trip. You must be fully self-sufficient, even though there are facilities. This means cooking utensils, camping gear, lighting, and anything else you think you would need on a bush trip lasting 3 days.

Your Vehicle and Gear
Gloves (working gloves not the ones your mum wore to church)
Recovery gear - As much as you have. As an accredited driver you should already know what is required.
Tools that you think would be necessary. Dont tell me because you drive a xHxIxLxUxXx you wont need tools. Everybody needs tools.
Jack / bottle / scissor / hilift or whatever you have
Tyre repair kits / spare valves / valve caps / tyre levers
Compressor
Wheel spanner/brace
Straps and ropes

Camping gear
Cooking utensils - AMC Classic dont work so well on open fires
Cutlery / crockery - once again not the bone china and fine silver ware you inherited from Granny, tin cups and plates are good enough.
Sunblock
Mosquito repellent

Clothing
Don't bring your Sunday best. Chances are they are going to get dusty, sweaty, muddy or even torn. Pack sensible hard working clothes that can take the punch when you get physical on some of the stages. A good pair of walking/hiking boots or shoes is also a good idea.
Wide brimmed hat
Sunglasses
Swimming gear. You might want to cool off in the pool and skinny-dipping might not be such a good idea.

Costs
Participants: The Boot Camp will cost you R3500 per person.

What you get for this
Advanced Offroad Driver Training,
Camping fees,
Trail fees,
3 meals per day. Although you will be cooking the meals, we will supply all the raw materials.
Cold drinks/water
Boot Camp - T-Shirt
AOA peak Cap
Accredited Certification

Additional family members who wants to join in the camping part of the weekend:
R400 per person (Adults)
R200 per child under 12
This is mainly for meals and cold drinks. Family members are very welcome to attand, but must not cause any disruption to the training programme.

Some more rules
The use of alcohol during the training will be strictly forbidden. Only once all the driving activities for the day has been completed can you have a drink or two to relax. And then only in moderation, as the next day's activities will kick off early in the morning, depending on the schedule.

Ground work / Preparation
Study the learner manuals you got with the previous training well. This will serve as the basis for the stuff we are going to do in this training course. A good knowledge of that learner manual could give you the edge when it comes to certain of the points scoring stages. You are also expected to prepare your vehicles to conform to the requirements set out above. Scrutineering will be carried out on arrival, and any vehicles deemed unsuitable will not be allowed.

Payment
To secure your entry in the Boot Camp we will require a R1500 non refundable deposit on or before 4 October 2011, and the balance paid by 4 November 2011 at the latest.

Well firstly a big big thankyou to Thys and the team (Dirk, Steph, Anton, Tinus)....a fun packed weekend was had by all, friday was a late one and I dont mean drinking...well maybe, Myself, Shimano, Hoppy and Petrus were relegated to the corner of the campsite for some reason, dont know why ?? However our Campsite was by far the most spectacular and well organised.... :mocking: On arrival it was all the introductions and then straight into lectures etc...Night Nav was on the Friday evening, this seriously interfered with our drinking evening but the four hooligans made up for that...Oh and not forgetting Val...what a awesome driver she is and she tackled everything that was thrown at her.....
Saturday was the full on trail drive, Anton got us all organised and in order and of we set, The trail is a difficult one, with very deep sand, ascents, descents and a wicked Rocky trail section after picnic lunch, here it was advised that it is a grade 5 and things can go wrong, a couple of guys decided not to attempt it but the Hilux boys/girls did us proud...heheheh.... I got to drive the Luxster all day and what a laugh Allan and I had....that thing moves pappie !!!! ...during the course of the day, various tests were performed, from snatching from deep sand with 2 vehicles (Petrus did this one) and I think Thys made it as difficult as possible and I still think he left his handbrake on on purpose !!!!! :boss: Myself and Wynand, val we got the tyre of the rim task on a steep descent...however we took the challenge with ease.... The final drive back to the campsite was a tight winding sand track, Hoppy had me in 2 wheel high with the diff on, talk about a rally drive, hectic but hilarious all the same.....I think it was the black labels calling actually.....
sunday was the paperwork test time, no one cheated (well only a little bit) and then it was pack up and off home, Hoppy gave a great lecture on Bush Mechanics and I did the lecture on Bush medics.....We also had a really great lecture on Recovery techniques which was very informative indeed..
A big thank to Dirks Wife Steph who did all the cooking etc and kept everyone happy...so a big hand to her, not the most thankful of jobs at anytime.....

All in all a great weekend was had by all, great crowd of people and I can now pronounce that myself, Hoppy, Petrus, Val, Wynand are Advanced offroad drivers at last.....

Lastly thanks Thys for all the behind the scenes admin, paperwork, documentation, manuals etc - brilliant...

I was at a loss for words for a moment, but that's fixed now. And the only photo's I took in the end were the group ones as we left camp. But now the words are back, and I have a ton of thanks to say......

Thys, Tinus, Anton and Dirk from African Offroad, Stu and Allan thanks so much for all you awesome instruction, training, encouragement and support over this weekend. My fellow hilux forum members Thys, Nick, Petrus, Wynand, Stu, Allan, and Carlo thanks, for all your support, encouragement and applause when I successfully completed the trail..... and definitely not forgetting my trusty Hilux, GI Jane, that performed at her best throughout the entire weekend to get me through without a single hiccup..... I had times, of (slight or was that serious) anxiety, loads of adrenalin, and great fun at bootcamp..... To those of you that were brave enough to drive parts of a trail with a woman driver well done.... think this weekend may have been one of those unforgettable memories that last a life time for me.....

The entire weekend was exceptional, good company, good food, good training.... definitely a highlight in my year....
