Elders

Post by ChrisF »

On my 40th birthday I signed an OTP for a Suzuki Jimny. this was to be my first ever 4x4. Due to other factors is was 3 months before we finally took it off road, Two Oceans trail outside Somerset West. Renier took good care of us on the day and with the use of handheld radios guided us through some tricky bits.

A few weeks later we did Bojaanskop - ALONE. The Jimny kept on taking us into new territory.

In March we sold the Jimny and got Hilux - 2,5 D-4D SC SRX.

As the intention with this vehicle is to go "overlanding" we fitted a higher canopy to create sleeping space inside the canopy.

Now we all know that "a few things" needs to be done before we overlanding .....

So here is the story of our Hilux:

Seatcovers - Got a quote for Escape Gear, when I heard the price (MUCH higher than when I bought for the Jimny) I just walked away. Got a set of Stingrays, the type with all the pockets.

Power to the back - For now, I provided power to the fridge in the back from the main battery. This connected via a relay, thus cutting this feed when the ignition is off. While we camp at sites with power this will do, dual battery will come later ....

base - I used 22mm ply wood to make a base in the bakkie. This way I can attach future items to the base without drilling holes in the bakkie (watch this space over the next couple of months...)

Curtains - Since we sleep inside the bakkie curtains was needed.

Bumpers - On our first trail the standard plastic bumper got its first "mark". Of to Burnco for front and rear bumpers. For the front I wanted an extra "towbar receptacle/recovery point". For the rear I wanted a custom unit that incorporates a bumper-towbar-recovery point and high lift jack points.

Clearly this is a project in the making. As it unfolds I will keep on updating this thread.

PLEASE, I am open for advice/experience from those that have been there and who are willing to share.

Eric I LOVE this Hilux !!

Yesterday we did the Walker bay Nature conservation trail between Stanford and Gansbaai. At the gate they only allow 4x4's in, not even 4x2's. After a while started wondering if this was just a conservation thing, as the trail could be done without spinning the fornt tires of an AVIS City .... untill we turned of to Sopiesklip. Going in was "interesting", but I could see that coming out was going to be more so .... the cross over holes where others have failed bears testimony. Took the tire pressures down to 1,1R and 1,3F. Low range and just idles her out of there in second gear. Not once did she loose traction, despite all the cross axles. Did not even use the diff lock.

Two more weeks before the builder finishes with my garage, then a few more weeks to sort it out. :)

The first car I ever bought was an old Opel Car-a-Van, and I similarly had it equipped for camping and off-road use. Most guys my age then were dropping suspensions while I tried to increase the height of my van by fitting slightly bigger tyres than the norm. I had a foam mattress cut for the rear as well, cost me a whole R10 for this from an upholsterer somewhere in Auckland Park. Many station wagons those days also had curtains fitted and mine was no exception. Spent many a happy night camping at the back of the van those days, Drakensberg, South Coast, Vaal Dam. Great fun. Of course, a cool box had to substitute for a fridge and water carriers were the norm as well. Two camping chairs, a folding metal table and my trusty Cadac gas stove & light were the total inventory.

The only 4x4 vehicle at the time was a Land Rover, way beyond my means! I bought one much later, but my old Opel took me to many places.

While it was fashionable to fit curtains to a station wagon, I never really did the "Orange on top of the Aerial" thing that was also the rave at the time! ;)

Edited: I managed to find a picture - even the same colour!

Ironman coils and shocks in the front. Which meant the head light shad to be lowered.

Some more stuff to be done this weekend ....

Maar die planne vorder. :)

Maak net seker almal is gr 8.8's!

Time has come to kit out Elders for some remote trips.

While getting more and more spares to kit out the back I started with the electrics in the front (dual battery electrics to be done after the layout in the back has been finalized).

The work in the front included:

- Wiring the spots to the high beams, via a relay and fuses

- Wiring mini air horns, again via a relay and fuse

- Wiring the 29 mhz radio, also via a relay and fuse to only get power when the igintion is on. automatically cutting the power when removing the key.

- A Hella power point in the engine bay

Now just to figure out the placement of the 29mhz radio. The idea was to mount it behind the centre console. Testing it I saw this interferes with opening the centre console lid ....

So pas die tweede laag vernis opgesit.

Finally the varnish is dry enough to carry on with the job.

Made the side rails, and painted it.

So tonight I was ready to finally start the instalation. But first the bak was dust proofed.

Made some more items, but need to make some noise (grind) to carry on with the next part. So closed shop for the night.

Once these brackets are in, the drawer system is next in line .....

Like so many others I hate the concept of drilling holes in my vehicle. Thus I over-thought the project. Finally I managed an installation whereby I drilled only ONE 5mm hole into the console inside my Hilux.

A 2mm Stainless Steel bracket was made up to fit the antenna. This bolted onto the mounting points for the canopy. {NOTE - Make sure you have enough distance between the antenna and the vehicle to turn the nut. My 5mm gap is not enough, and was very difficult to work with.}

The cable was routed and then brought into the cab via an existing grommet.

The radio mounting bracket was bolted to the console, using one of the console bolt holes and drilling one 5mm hole.

Power is supplied via a relay, activated with the ignition - thus the radio cant drain the battery if the vehicle is switched off.

Yesterday I used this for the first time on a trail. WHAT A PLEASURE to be part of the banter as the group progressed !!

Also was very handy when one of the vehicles over heated and fell behind. The group knew what was happening and could deal with the situation without any chaos.

Uiteindelik kon ek darem n paar goedjies in Elders installeer, na weke van voorbereiding.

120 liter water tank
40 liter water tank
2 Jerry kanne

One step closer for Elders

Second battery was just wired. Warn relay, fuese at either end of the positive wire, metal glands where the wires pass through the body .... all the good tips that have been so graciously shared here have been used.

Now to wire the distribution box and lighting ...

helps if you can borrow a PROPPER crimper from your neighbour ... :)

Time to update the ELDERS thread. :)

We have done a few weekend trips to test out ELDERS.

LOVELY !!

The rig meets our requirements. Clearly there is always a trade off between more "living space" and keeping everything small and simple ... the way we have it now meets our requirements and allows us the freedom to lock the house at any moment and hit the long road (just dont have enough leave to maximise this ...)

Today added one MAJOR upgrade to ELDERS - see first pic. :)

Then there is also another item on the bench that will be fitted in the next couple of days ... :)

Jip, I got some very good feedback on the T-Max ... then a few "old timers" reminded me that I bought rubbish, as I did not buy Warn ....

Hey this is what I can afford now, and I got it at a VERY good price !

Should get the cradle for the winch next week, then I can still fit it before the holiday trip. :)

Did you see my new sticker ? (the MAJOR upgrade) Finally a paid up member of the Lux clan ... :)

PS - Elders is booked for another "extra" next week as well .... :)

I got a mounting bracket for the winch from Burnco, to fit into the front and reach quick couplers.

Took a bit of re-working to mount the winch. Then I ran into some issues, as I want to store the winch in the back of the bakkie and the standard layout would not fit. After some head scratching I decided to mount the control box in a different position, this did mean I had to make some custom brackets first. Then the wiring and finally the testing....

Actually not, I still need to resolve the supply wiring. Due to the public holiday I cant get the spares for this today.

At least I was able to test the unit. :)

That's the way to mount a winch Chris! When it is not in use it is protected from the elements, it doesn't get waterlogged during watercrossings and it can do it's job from either front or rear! Brilliant.   That winch should last long enough for your grandkids to use..

Daai winch IS swaar !! seker so 45 tot 50 kg.

:shock2:

Toe ek by Camp World gesels met die manne wat die karavane diens en herstel toe lag die man net, JIP dit is n algemene probleem ! Sy raad is om n gat in die tenk te boor en n breather pyp op te koppel. Die idee van n breather pyp klink goed, MAAR as daai gat begin lek is dit n duur tenk in sy peetjie .....

En so soek ek toe bietjie rond .....

PS - daai brad harrison goed is DUUR !!!!!!
