Time for some feedback.

Before the Joburg trip I did an intercooler + exhaust + chip and dyno tune to Elders.

Nothing like 3 000 km to TEST the effect of this. :)

Cape Town to Joburg was done with the old high level canopy, and the solar panel bracket. Speeds varied between 105 and 115 km/h, GPS speed, on the cruise control.

NICE to be able to PASS a truck :) :) Elders now PULLS, and with the EGT gauge I can SEE the effect of the over fuelling that provides this amazing pull.

The average fuel consumption on the way up was 9,1 and 9,9 km/l. The last 200km up and the first 400 km down was at 9,99 km/l !! :)

Then we hit a thunderstorm and a STRONG head wind. Even at 115km/h on a level I could SEE the EGT climbing ! Even at 105km/h the EGT was about 40 degrees higher than the normal at 115km/h .... Understandably the fuel consumption dropped to 8,33 km/l. (might also be a combination of a slight under fuel on the previous tank....) The last tank was again 9,46 km/l.

bear in mind that on the way down I had a substantially larger canopy on ..... more about this in the next post .... :) :) :)

14 December we left Bellville at 3:00. There was ALREADY a geue at the Engen Winelands !! Jip, that early in the morning there was already a good bit of traffic. Thankfully everybody, well almost everybody, drove sensibly, and mile after mile passed by. The last week at work was HECTIC, and I was way too tired for this long drive .... regular stops did not help, and the time was passing faster than the miles .... Just after 15:00 we booked into a guesthouse at Bloemfontein - Heidi's.

on the 15th we continued up the N1, and tollgate after tollgate until we got to Johannesburg. Here I got off the highways before we hit the e-Tolls. We took a leisurely drive through Johannesburg - never drove through Johannesburg before, so it was an experience .... Then off to Delmas.

On the morning of the 16th the old canopy was taken off Elders, and Elders got a new Blinkgat camper canopy - http://www.blinkgatproducts.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Should mention here that Sarel makes these camper units on his farm outside Delmas. Sarel broke his leg 6 weeks back ! He spent a few days in hospital, got a plate inserted, and was back in the workshop - in a wheel chair, directing the operations ....

Sarel finished off 5 or 6 projects WHILE in the wheel chair !! :shock2:

One was an IVECO double cab unit - http://4x4community.co.za/forum/showthread.php?t=169251" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

A removable camper unit for a Land Cruiser single Cab - http://4x4community.co.za/forum/showthread.php?t=168712" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

WHILE fitting my camper canopy another removable camper unit was finished. I knew the owner of this unit and jumped in and helped. :)

Yet another unit stood in the corner and was finished the afternoon of the SAME day. Left the farm after sunset. Think of an off road trailer, the size of a QUEEN size bed, top pops up to access this massive bed. Below it ample packing space..... 36 hours later this unit was in Botswana !

Back at home, now to fit out the canopy (I ordered it BARE on the inside)

hehehe ..... my 2,6 m high garage roof is TOO LOW. At least I CAN stand upright inside the camper while fitting it out. :)

First the water tank, inlet pipe and breather pipes were installed.

Then the packing system.

Now the water reticulation is being done.

Then the bench on the left, including packing under it.

the fridge and gas plate on the right to follow

en natuurlik die elektries ....

Jissie Chris.Jy sal moet meer foto's gooi :beg:
Sover lyk dit goed.Ek is rerig mal oor Blinkgat se campers.

Inderwaarheid is my bak taper, wyer agter as voor ....

2,4bar pomp, maar LOW flow. Surgeflow FL 2202 - http://www.surgeflo.com/products/FL-22x.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Drinkwater vs bad/was water ....

Laat weet asseblief as jy iets kleiner kry.

Dinsdag oggend gaan Elders mooi form kry !! :cooldude: :cooldude:

Thanks Niel

The rig WORKS ! :) Really looking forward to our next long trip.

this trip was a bit of a bust - "swart muggies" het my opgevreet !!! I have lumps and bumps all over my body where I was bitten. Just above my right ankel I scratched until it started bleeding .... RED and inflamed ! Got some meds from the pharmacy on Sunday, actually need to apply some cream now. Meds have starting working and the worst of the itch has subsided, but lumps and bumps are still there, thankfully the area above my ankle is not "hot" any more.

net result - we cut our trip short and is now back home

Thank you Chris, just what I wanted to see! Obviously stacks of space and loads of comfort. Does your "peetkind" travel with you as well, or is it strictly a two-seater vehicle?

I would also like to see a photo taken a few steps back from the rear with the tent erected, if you have one.

Eric strickly 2-seater ...... THAT was the most difficult desision .....

Wth the IFS models the door panels are so thick that one cant even replace the two seats with a bench ....

So the rain let up for a while, and I took the opportunity to take some more photos.

This is what Elders looks like with the lid down (if you look closely you will note the latches on the four corners had been loosened by the time I took these photos)

A couple of details you can note on the outside pics:
- there are C-channels under the bed (above the cab), these double to house an aluminium table
- you can see the table above the passanger door
- The canopy was made to fit the inside dimensions of the bak (due to the width of the bak it would have been possible to go wider)
- I requested a taper of about 5 cm from bottom to top (I did not want a "square" box, yet did not want to sacrifice too much space due to an aggressive taper)
- the steps of the ladder has a tread depth of 100mm, and anti-slip has been added ontop of it.
- the ladder was made slightly too long, to be trimmed once the canopy was loaded. On our first camp I realised that you sometimes encounter ground that slopes lower at the back of the vehicle, then this extra length comes in HANDY :)
- the door can be locked, yet opened from inside providing safety at night

How to lift and lower the "lid" ....

Lifting :
- loosen the four clips on the corners
- get in, and lift the back section (slight lift, then the gas lifts takes over)
- undo the rope catches
- lean forward (over the bed) and push up with one hand, again a slight lift required then the gas lifts take over
- undo the cross-ties
- for longer stays - insert the pegs to open the outside "afdakke"

Closing :
- remove pegs from "afdakke:
- apply cross-ties (this helps to pull the canvas inward when closing)
- take hold of the two ropes, and PULL it back ward. The nose section is now 50% lowered.
- apply the rope catches - to hold the nose section down
- turn around, and take hold of the back bracket. PULL it towrds you, lowering the back part of the roof ... remeber to duck ...
- stand on the back step, slightly lift the roof and push the back canvas in.
- use the pull-stick, lower the front further, leaving it open by about 100mm. Now walk around the vehicle and make sure all the canvas is "in".
- pull the front down, and close the four clips, insert the safety pegs
