New Here....... This is my BEAST
Hi All
I'm new to this Forum and to the 4x4 world.
I've always been an outdoor guy since a kid, been camping, water ski-ing, off road biking.... But this 4x4 bug has been biting me for the last 6 yrs and I've had 2 4x4's my first was an Isuzu Frontier 2.8DT. 2nd a really *a* nissan Sani 3l V6 (will never buy one again) Didn't do much 4x4ing with those 2 vehicles
But now I'm dead serious and have managed to get my hands on a 1984 Hilux 2.4td (my new BEAST).....
I'll post some pics, Your (good or bad) feed back on this vehicle will be gr8

Many Many thank for all the warm welcomes i have recieved.......
This forum is amazing and its the people that make it that way....
Im sure some of us will meet in person sometime soon as i have joined the Hilux club too....
Now I must admit i am in need of some 4x4 training as the only 4x4ing i have done would be classed as playing in the mud
So any advice will be an advantage to me......
O and seriously what is the best equipment to get to start off with to carry in the Beast...... cos im not sure what to start buying and there is sooooo much out there it makes ones head feel like a punching bag at times... :alvarin:

Re: New Here....... This is my BEAST
To start off with I would suggest a couple of shackles and a snatch rope and a hi-lift jack, no other jack, jack

Re: New Here....... This is my BEAST
The equipment you need I think depends on the purpose of the Beast, overlanding or obsticle trails or both. On one of the GTG bring the Beast, get out and play so that you learn the driving skills and also the limits and/or strong points on the Beast and you start from there.MOFASA wrote:Many Many thank for all the warm welcomes i have recieved.......

But I think you're gonna need these anyway:
1. tyres make a huge difference, decide if you want muds or A/T - will depend on the purpose of the toy.
2. suspension upgrade
3. proper recovery and lifting points
The list is endless, you'll see , but if you know the purpose it becomes easy and you don't waste money.

Re: New Here....... This is my BEAST
Johno, one of the first things is a suspension upgrade .... standard suspension is rarely adequate except maybe for strict overlanding, but we all know that's not where it ends .... there's always the urge to play a little. An upgrade could be an expensive exercise, but just at a glance it appears that your vehicle has already had some form of suspension make-over, so I would look past that for now.
First thing you need is solid recovery points that are secured directly or indirectly but in line with the chassis. There will be times when you will need to be recovered and times when you will need to assist with a recovery ... a tow-hitch, bumper or bull-bar is not a suitable recovery point.
Then at the very least, you need a tow rope / strap, preferably not too short .... about 8 to 10 metres with a 3 ton rating or more. Also some bow shackles of a similar rating .... D shackles are OK for ropes, but not as forgiving on straps. It's like an unwritten rule that you have your own equipment and not depend on others ..... straps and ropes have a limited lifespan, so whoever is being recovered supplies the equipment. This is especially true of kinetic (snatch) straps / ropes that have a very limited number of safe usage. Kinetic straps are a bit more pricey than tow straps and are not suitable for all types of recovery .... mostly just when you're bogged down, and a tow rope can still work in most such cases, so a kinetic strap is not an essential but still a 'good to have' item.
Next you need a place to store these items from where they will be easily accessible. I just use an ammo box that is dedicated to recovery equipment and some rudimentary tools.
Other important items are a spade (not a shovel) and a panga or machete and perhaps a good work-light.
A hi-lift jack is by no means a necessity, and certainly one of the more dangerous pieces of equipment, but nonetheless a handy tool to have on occasion. Essentially it's called a 'farm jack' but because the Hi-Lift brand is such a popular choice people mostly refer to a farm jack as a hi-lift jack. If you do decide to get one, get a decent quality and rating. Then you will also need to fit suitable jack-points to the vehicle ... these are often incorporated with the recovery points but not necessarily ideally so .... they are probably better to be independent since sometimes you might need to use both at the same time. You will also require the jack attachment for the lift points.
Another essential item IMO is a decent first-aid kit that stays in the vehicle.
That should give you a sound starting point.

Thanks Mud for your insite into this.....
I want to lift my BEAST more due to the front wheels rubbing on the body when you turn especialy left..... (have no idea why )
Any ideas on this problem....
What is the best way to lift her more.....
I have thought about machining up blocks that fit between the leafsprings and the axle, would this idea work.... Whats the downfall of doing it this way....
Thanks Traveler glad you approve of my BEAST, cant wait till i get her in the bush, I've heard lots of good feed back on the SFA when it comes to bush work.

Re: New Here....... This is my BEAST
What size tyres do you have on the Hilux? Anything bigger than 31"s and you need to move the axle forward to prevent rubbing. If it rubs during normal road use, you should see what it does off-road under articulation!! With 33" tyres on my SFA the axle was moved forward by about 35mm and the rubbibg was gone, except under extreme articulation it did touch at full lock. Search on the forum for axle move. It has been discussed plenty times before even with photographs and the works.MOFASA wrote:Thanks Mud for your insite into this.....

Dont put blocks between the axle and the springs. It promotes axle wrap under braking and puts a lot of unneccessary strain on the leaf springs. Rather fit longer shackles.

Re: New Here....... This is my BEAST
Yep, Thys has put it in a nutshell (don't look at his head ) .... move axle, no spacer blocks and if necessary longer shackles.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

It has been discussed plenty times before even with photographs and the works.ThysdJ wrote: Thanks Traveler glad you approve of my BEAST, cant wait till i get her in the bush, I've heard lots of good feed back on the SFA when it comes to bush work.
Dont put blocks between the axle and the springs. It promotes axle wrap under braking and puts a lot of unneccessary strain on the leaf springs. Rather fit longer shackles.[/quote]
The tires i have are 285/75R16 not sure if its 31" or 33" maybe you know...
If i put in longer shackles what will the complications be and will that solve the rubbing of the tires?

They are almost 33" tyres... Move that axle boet!! That will get rid of the problem completely.MOFASA wrote:The tires i have are 285/75R16 not sure if its 31" or 33" maybe you know...

Longer shackles will give you some lift, there is a ratio, and some of the more knowledgable guys can tell you what that is. But longer shackles can influence your handling negatively.

Re: New Here....... This is my BEAST
Longer shackles is not the first option here, the axle move is. If you lengthen the shackle by 40mm to only get 20 mm lift, but a 40mm longer shackle will already start to influence on-road handling .... the 20mm gained is not worth it and won't cure your problem, just improve it slightly.
As Thys said, moof da axle, boet!

Thanks guys....
Im not toooooo worried about road handling i got this BEAST to go in the bush so I'm only interested in what makes it better for that purpose.... As long as i can still drive her on the road it's fine....
So if i lift her with 40mm shackles to give me 20mm more body clearance and do a axle move will that sort the problem out completely?
Thys can you point me in the right direction as to how to do an axle move?
Many thanks guys

Re: New Here....... This is my BEAST
John if you move the axle you dont need the lift... but I guess you want it so do that after the move. Search for "Axle Move" on the Search Function.. you'll find pics and stuff. Alternatively give Hoppy a call, he can tell you exactly what to do..
