Dawid's Hilux
I have a 1996 2.8D DC Hilux which is being converted to a 3.0D at the moment. It is pretty standard still except for the OME leaf springs and the Rancho shocks.

Re: Dawid's Hilux
I finally got the bakkie back yesterday after 8 weeks.
I must say it was worth the wait. With the 5L motor, the driveability has improved so much. I drive much lighter on the gas pedal now, the response is much better and smoother. Slow corners in town can now be done in 3rd gear instead of 2nd as before. All the vital signs seems in order so far. The temperature is just below 90°C on the highway and steady on 90°C in town. I noticed 2 oil drops on the floor last night. Will monitor that. Hopefully it is just some spilled oil which is running down. Can't wait to fill the tank and monitor the consumption. My old 2.8D motor was rather thirsty.
Cost:
Motor - R16500-00
Fitment with oil, filter, timing belt, carry over of some parts + VAT: R4400-00
A rather expensive exercise, but hopefully worth it!

Re: Dawid's Hilux
Since the conversion was completed a week ago, I've only driven the bakkie for about 50km. As luck would have it, the alternator decided to give in the very next day. Fortunately is was the old alternator off the 3L motor. So I sent them the 70A alternator which came with the 5L motor. At 17h00 I phoned them to get a progress report (Friday afternoon), sorry it does not fit. I had to remind them that it originally came off that motor and that I probably still have the mounting bracket at home. So I dropped it off at the Garage Sunday night. Monday after work I went to collect the vehicle. Sorry, the bracket does not fit onto the chassis. :x
I went to the autolec to see for myself. Turns out that the bracket also forms the engine mounting and the angle to the chassis is different. The autolec wanted to overhaul the old one at between R350 - R800 since I won't find a suitable bracket. I then had a look in the Gregory's manual and there they showed both alternators. I phoned Taitsaam Spares the next morning and R80-00 later I had the bracket. Had it dropped off at the garage at 09h30 only to discover at 14h30 that the receptionist is still using it as a paper weight! :x :?
Anyway it now seems that the 'new' alternator will work and I should get the bakkie back this afternoon, hopefully! Got a new clutch master cylinder as well. I first need to clean up the firewall paint a bit and will then fit the master cylinder. Will try and put some kilos on this weekend.

Hi Dawid,
Auto Electricians seem to be much the same everywhere, no more pride in their work. Luckily, you can still find the odd Auto-Elec who does take pride in his work.
Please post some pictures of your engine in this thread:

Enjoy your Hilux!

I posted photos of the engines before and after. Not much difference in looks but an improvement on the performance. Now to get that rear crankshaft oil seal leak sorted out...

Wish I knew!
I should have the oil leak sorted out this week. I need to drive it a bit to make sure everything is tightened and fitted correctly. Found a hose for the alternator as well. Another dealer had one in stock. 8)

Re: Dawid's Hilux
Must admit I'm not pushing for it, I specified the "desert beige" colour. I *think* it the colour code 4R3, but it *might* be the colour code 4E9.
Marius, what would the correct colour code be for the light beige, almost the same colour of butter? The 4E9 looks dark on the Toyota Website, but the "Beige Mica Metallic" makes me wonder if this is the correct color after all. I am after the same colour that appeared on the SA4x4 magazine
Anyway, the longer I wait for it, the better the chances of Toyota deciding to bring out a Turbo-powered model...
( PS: Don't let Benhur see this... )

Re: Dawid's Hilux
Got the bakkie back yesterday to my surprise. Was expecting it later in the week. They only replaced the oil pressure sensor and some washers on the oil pipe banjo connection. They didn't replace the crank seal. No charge and told me to check it out. Went home and fitted the new alternator hose. Took 5 mins and while I was underneath the bakkie, I noticed a few drops of oil hanging on the bottom of the oil filter. This then drips onto the oil pressure sensor and further down onto the banjo connection. This made me think they did not find the fault. I then loosened the filter (which was overtightened I think) and hand tightened it. Wipe all the oil and went for a short drive. This morning the floor seemed clean. Holding thumbs that the leak is now sorted.
