Hello All,

Not a 4x4 owner yet...might own a 2003 3.0 KZTE 4x4 (all I can afford). looking at buying one with 136k Km for R149k. Still wanna haggle over the price as it has the 4x2 steel rims with crappy tyres & not the original alloys.

Hello Stefan and welcome to this forum! Here's wishing you all the best in your aim to acquire a Hilux 4x4. There are quite a few available at very reasonable pirices here on the forum, especially the older SFA's which I dare say are a little tougher and more suited to rugged off-road appkications than the newer IFS models. I also think that you would be able to pick one up in pretty decent nick for about R55k .... leaving you more financial reserves for any repairs / upgrades. You may want to re-think which model you want to purchase.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Thanks!! See U R from EL; I lived in PE for 9 years, just moved back to GP 3 months ago (promotion, b4 U ask why)

My other half agreed to the 4x4 as long as it's a D/C; and must be facelift model or newer (contemplated an SFA pre- 2000 model) Have read all the topics on KZTE vs 2700i; only one I can get currently is 4x2. Can't buy it as 3d vehicle, will use it to work & back as well.

The KZ in the pic looks like it's in good nick, and I see you've more or less got your heart set on a later model DC Lux. Nothing wrong with that, but if this sale does'nt work out just keep on looking. Something suitable (the right deal) will come along.

You say you lived in PE for some time .... are you originally from GP then?

Tx guys,

Been trolling the net...haven't checked the jakmail yet, tx 4 the tips. Plenty 4x2's around. looking @ one this week, 2004 R132k private sale. Dealers are nuts, they're selling them 2004's for R149k. Saw a 2002 KZTE 4x2 at inspectacar again today for R144k, no wonder it hasn't sold!

Hey FD, look what I found in Klerksdorp! :o Bank repo, had winch with no bumper which they replaced; the tail section below the gate as well as the wheel mouldings have been resprayed. Fresh coat of rubber in the bin and new t/cover. R149950, 2003, 136000 km. Interior could have been better, scratches on centre console, fake leather on the sides of driver seat cracked. Front tyres brand new (firestones). No service history though :eh: apparently Toyota confirmed that timing belt has been changed at 90 000 km.
Should I take it back to Pta tomorrow?

Edit : battling to attach pics, page times out b4 pics are uploaded. Will try when I have 3G coverage again.

Stef I see in the Auto trader is A 2003 4X4 KZ for R140,000, see http://search.autotrader.co.za/www/cars ... 5186469585

I am not sure what they go for but if I look at the prices in the junk mail and autotrader the price for the bank repo is not a huge bargain. Seems like a rather normal price if not a bit high perhaps. One would expect to buy a repo at least at its trade in value, you must get a good discount to make up for the risk you take since you do not know anything about the history of the vehicle.

Here are the pics; dealer bought it at auction & did some work on it.

Piet, the autotrader one you suggested is a bit dodge, saw it at the dealer (Inspectacar), 250 000 km+; looks like it worked hard; I can get a 2004 KZTE 4x4 with 250k on clock for R149 950, body work also taken a beating though.

On the photo it does not look too bad. After you looked at so many you must trust your gut feeling.

My gut is a little upset right now

Bit concerned 'bout the service history, worst case I'd need a new engine(not sure what it costs (Holden motor import +- R18k). But then again, cars with service histories also fail.

It certainly drives ok; drove it in 4H for a bit; no issues with locking/unlocking the hubs. Clutch is smooth. Felt like the handbrake was on in 4H ie didn't freewheel forward down the pavement in neutral where in 2H it would??
Couldn't feel the turbo kicking in , felt definite torque between 2000 -3000 rpm though; previous one I drove had a definite threshold where one could feel the turbo start to work, not sure if that is what is referred to as turbo lag, or maybe they upped the boost a bit ? Anyhow , this one has a much smoother "torque curve". Never owned a diesel vehicle b4 so any comments welcome

Hi All - although I have extensive 4x4 driving experiece thanks to the old SA Weermag, I now use my Hilux mostly to tow my ski boat. Would like to access some friends who can help with some parts for my 1985 Hilux 2.2 Petrol 4x4. Steering wheel and ash tray (I am a non-smoker). Have been driving numerous Hiluxes but this one is special. Secondly - I need to replace the engine with a more powerfull diesel - but I do not want to cut the engine mountings - please suggest what I could use. If all these questions should not be dealt with here - please point me in the right direction. If you see me on the beach in Vidal, Sodwana or the lower Moz areas - keep this post in mind and come get a beer. Friendship is a good thing. Thanks a milllion. Johan Fourie

Hi, Johan! And welcome to the best forum by far!

Tell us a bit more about yourself and post some pics. And then why, oh why, would you want a diesel! Rather put in a Lexus V8 or 7MGE.

Anyway, enjoy!

Hi Johan, and welcome! I have no idea which diesel would be the better option, (not clued up on diesels at all) .... the old 2.4 was considered to be bullet proof, but as I understand, would be too sluggish. As for the engine mounts, I'm almost certain you would have to replace them for the heavier diesel motor. Nonetheless there are enough diesel fanatics here that can give you more meaningful advice / feedback. Enjoy the forum!

Hi all Experts (all Hilux fans) - I will put in any Toyota engine that will do the job. I heard that I can give the current engine more oemf by putting a Weber on - it has a Maus branch system on at the moment. I do not need speed. If I can toe at 80 km p/h I'm happy. But the power to do beach work is important. I do not use the vehicle that often as I work in Africa but when I am home for the 3 weeks rotasion leave I use it a lot - so not worried to even stick in a V6 or V8. Would like to stay with genuine Toyota parts if at all possible.
Would'nt a Lexus V8 be very expensive?

As soon as I get the hang of the forum I will post some photos of my Hilux trokkie.

Johan, why did you say specifically a diesel motor ..... a petrol motor will generally deliver more power over the rev range. From the sound of it you will be wanting to tow in the sand (a boat perhaps)? The 2.2 is a little sluggish and not a good towing option on the open road, although in the sand with donkey gear it more than holds it's own. Perhaps the EFI route is a fair option, least disruptive and more affordable than a motor conversion, but if you're set on a lot more power, the 2.7i (3RZ) might be a better choice .... motors are pricey but still an easy conversion. To go the 'full hog' fit a Lexus V8 ... probably the most pricey of all because of all the other mods that have to be done to accommodate and handle that motor .... bell-housing / gearbox / propshafts / diffs and axles / radiator / body lift / etc. etc. ....not to speak of fuel consumption and all the little niggly issues that would need to still be sorted after the conversion is complete. The slow and humble and reliable 4Y with it's low end torque has been a admiral power plant, absolutely no doubt, but they are no longer in production by Toyota and one wonders for how long quality spares will still be available. Personally I would go with the 2.7i .... but that's just me.

Jaco, hoe is jou brandstof verbruik? .... The 7MGE / 1JZ / 2JZ might even be better overall options than the Lexus, but that long six has to be fitted with a shoehorn .... radiator / radiator hoses and motor peripherals are also a tight squeeze. .... and then there's the water on the plugs issue! :D:

I still like a motor with a bit of space when I work on it .... my hands aren't as dexterous as they used to be ..... and I like a place to put my beer down close by without it being in the way! :D:
