Hi! My Diff blew up - Please help!

Post by Tim86 »

Howzit Guys

I'm a new member of this forum but have been using it as a great resource in keeping my beloved running - thanks a million for the help so far:)

Unfortunately my rear diff crown gear has shredded itself and I'm trying to get hold of a replacement. Can anyone advise me on the best place to find a used one in the Cape Town area? I need solely the gear by itself. The bakkie is a 1986 Hilux 4x4 with an import type diff, ex 2.2 petrol, now Ford V6:):)

Many Thanks!

I would do new, both crown wheel and pinion unless this is just a fun vehicle that's not going to do any longer trips. CW & P gears wear in to each other, replacing just one will accelerate initial wear, especially if it's a used part.

sadly correct.

And a gear does not break in an instant .... reasonable chance of some wear on the remaining gear teeth. And once the hardened surface goes the gear tooth has no chance of lasting

Crown wheel and pinion were sold as matching pair. I have replaced my rear diff 1989 with Gearmax m84 strong diff with locker. Bought it in Pretoria for R8000-oo. The Lexus is a bit too strong for standard diff.

Thanks for the advice guys and thanks for the contact Mr B! Allan sorted me out with a crown gear straight away - absolutely sterling chap! Luckily for me he didn't think the fix would be too problematic, we shall see how it turns out.
Cheers

Well here's a belated update - I rebuilt the diff to the best of my ability and to my amazement there is absolutely no whine or noise at all, smooth as butter:)

Can anyone enlighten me as to why the local rear diff has no apparent breather - or even a drain plug for that matter? Wouldn't the lack of a breather be detrimental to the seals???

Local diff does have a breather (no drain plug) - the breather is not on the pumpkin as on the import, but on the top of the RHS axle housing. Might have a small protective shroud (See pic below).

If you don't see it, it could be that it's missing.

Instead of going to the stealers to buy a replacement, rather get a screw-in nipple at a fraction of the price and fit a high level breather tube. Might as well get two and do the front diff as well.
