Hi Guys and Which canopy?

Post by DawieR »

Hi Guys,

I am new to this forum. I have owned Hiluxes all of my life and will be replacing my 2009 3L D4D Raider 4x4 AT D/Cab with the latest model 2.8GD 4x4 AT D/Cab next week. I want to install a canopy which will be used mainly for luggage and transporting extra kids. Which canopy is the best to buy for this application? I hope to get some helpful info from you knowledgable fellows!

There is quite a few more players in the market from back when I was in the market for one. (2 -3 years ago).

I bought an aluminum canopy from Gomad for my KZ and then later for my D4D  very good product and great price!

Neil and some others on the forum also bought the Gomad. But like I said, there are more manufacturers now so you have more options.

Do you require something with doors on the side? It is much easier that way than just at the back, and do you prefer fiberglass vw alu?

If you like the canopy must fit your shape of the vehicle then you have a long list of fiberglass ones to choose from. I would however go for the ARB as it is one of only 2 that I know of that has central locking integrated to the rear door. The other option is a steel canopy which would be my first choice over the other steel ones on the market simply cause it is not a block shape but flows nicely with the vehicle shape is the Samittr canopies. It also has central locking feature. Recently I found they are available in Jo'Berg

Thanks a lot for the responses so far!
ARB does not have canopies for the 2016 Hilux in SA yet.
I looked at several options and also had a look at the Steel Top Canopy (Sammitr) and was really impressed. I think I will go with this one.

Got a price on the Sammitr today, R35000 incl colour coded for the V2 birdwing for the extra cab. Not too bad considering the quality and the central locking feature. Already ordered my Alucab canopy,(R24500) fitment due in 2 weeks. Will post pics when done.

I got my Steeltop Canopy and I am very impressed with it. Good quality and I like the locking function that works with the remote off the bakkie's key. Rear window de-mister, very neat padded lining inside, dome light functions the same way as the dome light inside the cab.

This is exactly what I wanted.

Thanks for all the suggestions received.

Can anybody help me. I have the steeltop and want to mount the frontrunner tracks on the top to put on a rtt.

4x4 Megaworld wont do it because of the lining in the inside.
LASport said to take it to the supplier (joburg) and let them strip the lining so LAS can fit the tracks with washers and nuts.

Both fitment centres wont use rivnuts or stainlessteel rivets as they say it wont take the punishment.

So my question is, seeing all these hiluxes with the steeltops and frintrunner rails, where do they fit them, and do they remove the inner liner to fit it?
