New to the Forum

Post by ziggzter »

Hi All,
New to the forum, currently looking at fullfilling a dream and finally purchasing myself my first Toyota Hilux.
Now that i'm finally in the market from the end of this month and have questions that i need aswered regarding Diesel vs Petrol, 2,7 vs KZTE etc , and thought what better place than to get all the answers here, and hopefully find one to buy on here as well.
But as mention i am new to forum so not exactly sure where to look or what has and hasnt been discussed before but will have a look around the site.

If you have any pointers on where to look ( For topics on pro's and cons of Hilux models ) Diesel vs Petrol etc.
Or for vehicles for sale i would appreciate it.

The post is really to say Hello and introduce myself....

thanks a lot

Welcome

The KZTE vs 2.7 vs SFA as well as the D4D vs 2.7 vs 4.0 V6 have been discussed at length....run a search and you will find a wealth of info at your fingertips.

In general be weary of a 2nd hand diesel, lots of tips here on the forum of pitfalls and what to look for, but there certainly are some good ones around.

Good luck with the search !

Hi Andre, and welcome!

IRO a choice between petrol and diesel is much of a personal preference. If it were me, I would lean very strongly towards the petrol - fuel costs are a little higher but the maintenance costs are a lot lower, especially if it's a vehicle that already has a fair mileage. The 2.7 is a motor that belongs in the stable of "bullet proof" Toyota engines with very little that goes wrong with them. The KZ is also a tough motor, but there is the tendency to burn / crack heads if they have been abused or over-worked - something that you will not be aware of when buying 2nd hand. Then there's the possibility of developing problems with the injectors or the diesel pump. All these things are very costly repairs.

If however you can find a diesel (KZ or D4D) that falls within your budget and has a reasonably low mileage it's worth considering.

Another factor may be if you intend doing a lot of touring in neighbouring countries, or even higher up in Africa - fuel can be an issue sometimes when petrol is not available and you have to wait for a delivery, whereas diesel is popular and usually always available.

Good luck with your choice. (Oh, also have a look in the "For Sale" section on the forum and keep an eye on it, you might just find the right one there.) :winkx:

I see that Stef posted while I was typing this, but he substantiates my point about being careful when buying 2nd hand diesels with high mileage.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Hi Stef and Mud Dog,
Appreciate the message. I have always been really keen on the KZ. But wont lie with reading some of the posts i see they have their challenges and seeing the general price these days ( with very high milage ) of the KZ i am still in shock ;) Excellent for youguys you have had them for 10 years ( and hardly depreciated ). But bad for us wanting one....??
I have always been told that the 2.7 are extremely thirsty. But need to start looking intio that more...
I dont see myself going far up Africa, more general use in and around SA.

I will keep reading, thanks again ...

The thing is, if you could find a decent KZ especially a 4x4 you should run TO it ....and be prepared to pay over book value. They are scarce, I battled to find one back in 2010 and gave up eventually.

Have a look at this one
http://www.4x4community.co.za/classifie ... -4x4/cat/4

The 2.7 is thirsty, as is its newer derivative in the Vigo shape; I'm quite partial to the 4.0 V6 and would choose that over the 2.7 as the consumption is more or less the same.
