Hi,
My name is Antoinette van der Laak from Someren-Heide in The Netherlands; i'm 42 years old and work in IT.
My partner Frank-Jan and i have been travelling to the former USSR for a number of times and decided it is time for the Big One. Overland from The Netherlands via the the Stans and Mongolia to Vladivostok in 2019/2020.
Deep in our hart we would love to own a Landcruiser, but with roadtaxes in The Netherlands it is very expensive to drive one if you're not self-employed (3000 ZAR every month)
The best alternative therefor is a Toyota Hilux with a canopy and Rooftop Tent.
We hope to find a lot of information about the car on this forum. And please feel free to pass on a lot of advice.
Antoinette

Welcome to the forum.
LOTS and lots of information here on kitting out for overlanding trips.
Feel free to ask as your plans develop.
Here are two builds to get you thinking :
NOT practical as a daily driver. but what a stunning overlanding vehicle !!!!

This is the classic canopy on a standard bakkie :

Welcome aboard Antoinette!
Nothing wrong with a Hilux and to be honest with you, I would choose it over a Landcruiser in some instances. Being a lighter vehicle your fuel economy will be better but your load weight capacity will be less - just plan your equipment / camping kit carefully to eliminate unnecessary weight. Plenty of info here on the forum about kit for overlanding.

When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.
Life is like a jar of Jalapeño peppers ... what you do today, might burn your ass tomorrow.
Don't take life too seriously ..... no-one gets out alive.
It's not about waiting for storms to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.
And be yourself ..... everyone else is taken!

Welcome to the forum Antionette.
We also opted for the hilux with lower costs overall to keep running, than the Cruiser.

Welcome!!
I don't believe there is anything Hilux related that you wouldn't find here. Good luck with your planning.
