Welcome Malcolm!

The 4Y was a tough little motor, virtually bullet proof, and could take an awful amount of abuse. I might be mistaken, but I seem to recall that here in the RSA they were discontinued as a motor in the Hilux from 1995 and were replaced with the 2.4 lit 22R motor. If this is indeed so, then the vehicle must be older than 1996 or the motor is a replacement. The fitting of an older 2.2lit 4Y motor in place of the 2.4lit 22R was not an entirely uncommon practice since the 22R was only marginally more powerful and quite a bit more thirsty.

Either way, you still have a legendary workhorse vehicle. Enjoy it! :winkx:

Thanks Mud Dog .

Now im not sure what engine it is . She has got good torque in first an second gear , Maybe she is a 2.4 .. Im pretty sure on the license disc it says 2.2 .. I will have to double check on that . I got the vin number checked out by a toyota dealership an he said she was 1996 on system ..
Is there a sure way of finding out if she a 2.4 ?

Malcolm, like I said, I might be mistaken. There is the possibility that a '95 model which was only bought / registered in '96 and if that's the case, then the registration papers will reflect it as a '96 but the VIN however should give the correct model.

The 4Y (2.2 lit) has the intake and exhaust manifolds on the same side (passenger side) whereas the 22R (2.4 lit) is a cross-flow motor with the intake on the drivers side and the exhaust on the passenger side. The 4Y has the plugs on the driver's side and the 22R has the plugs on the passenger side. That should make it easy for you to identify at a glance. :winkx:

Just as reliable, but as I said, a tad heavier on fuel consumption. Your driving style will help a lot with this and perhaps a hidden blessing is that it may be a bit easier accessing parts if you want to do an EFI conversion to the motor at a later stage. :winkx:

Welcome to the forum.
I had a 2.4P which was only very marginally heavier on fuel, but did have a bit more grunt for the little extra power.
Enjoy...

Finished my first tank of petrol on her . 7.4km / L thats easy to live with . most of my driving was short trips to town and a bit around the farm . She neeeds tyres on her badly .I did how ever test the 4x4 and she is fantastic . I have a hardbody 4x4 that i normall play around with , And she cant get up little hills when its wet . Luxy just cruised up an over , Had my passenger grasping for the seatbelt .... Just waiting for a hand oil pump so i can do the oil in the diffs and gearbox .I would like to do the rear diff and gearbox before i venture on the open road .

 That fuel economy is more than fair for the 2.4 with short trip driving. Enjoy! :winkx:
