2017 2.8 Hilux Brakes

Post by DonLou »

Hi all,

I purchased a 2.8 Hilux DC A/T 4X4 in January! I do alot of long distance traveling so to say that the bakkie is on 16800Km now!

I travel to Namibian border, Nelspruit, Belfast, Sishen and other places, i would say 13500Km of the km on the bakkie is open road.

A couple of times when braking the bakkie pulls to the left, last week Wednesday i just heard metal to metal on the bakkie and stopped, my left front rim was full of metal dust! I phoned the dealer and was informed to phone roadside for them to load the bakkie on a truck.

The bakkie was taken to the dealer and i was advised that the brakes are finished and that the disc only on the left hand side started grinding away! In saying that the right front pads was basicaly finished and the disc full of hot spots and hairline cracks!

Toyota says it is driver abuse but i was advised by 5 different brake specialists that there is something wrong with the braking system as there is uneven brake power on the callipers.

Keep in mind that i drive alot of open road! I do not tow at ALL i dont even load stuff on the back of my bakkie and never removed the tony cover!

I dont know who to speak to anymore as Toyota SA says that its technician is more than capable of making these calls, i just cannot see this being possible without something being wrong on the braking system?

Can someone help me or point me in the right direction on who to contact regarding this! My bakkie has been standing eversince and is my office!

Thank you

Take it to the AA for an investigation and report. Take photos yourself of both the left and right side discs and brake pads that show the difference in wear between the two sides. Bear in mind that there will always be a difference but it should not be dramatic - I would say that anything more than 2mm difference is not normal.

I assume that you took it for all it's regular services and they should have picked up that there was unusually uneven wear, but they could also argue that you never brought it to their attention. Either way, 17000 km is a ridiculously low mileage for brake pads which should give you about three times that depending on how the vehicle is used and driven.

With photos and an AA report they may be prepared to come to the party. It's worth a shot.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Thank you Mud Dog,

Will check out this option!
I asked Toyota to send a technician to the bakkie and have him meet me with a brake specialist and this request was also declined yesterday!

To be honest i Love the bakkie but the attitude from Toyota SA is shocking!

Thank you.

Somehow I am not shocked at the response you got from Toyota, I got a similar response on my fortuner with the shudder on the disks. According to Toyota it is quite normal for brake disks to shudder, even when the car is still under warranty. I have to now skim or replace the disks at my cost. :eh:

Hi Wayne,

Yes well im not leaving this without a fight! My bakkie been standing for a week now! But they cant give me answers as to why my bakkie pulls to the left when braking! I drive long distances everyday and my family gets into that vehicle! Im not prepared to put my safety or that of my family into that vehicle without answers!

Get one or two reports from the brake specialists. An AA report too if you can.

Have them include the differences btw all the brake pads. Refer to the ombudsman and inform Toyota SA that you will be posting the info on fb as well as relevant 4x4 sites....

Hi Donnovan,

I don't know if you have done this but go in to the branch and speak to the dealer principal. Bypass the workshop manager. Just be frank with the guy, are they standing by their findings, or is it going to be one long protracted dispute which means you will have to spend some time and money on getting an independent opinion and possibly will have to engage the ombudsman, and regardless of the end result, at the very least of it all the dealer will lose a repeat customer (not so sure that even means anything to the dealers anymore...)

The dealer principal has actually told me from day 1 to just pay and dont fight them! So no help from DP! Workshop manager and Foreman have really been helpfull but this issue is with Toyota SA now! They are willing to do all the brake tests but i must fix the bakkie first, so i said no they fix it test it and if it is my fault i have no option but to pay! But if something is wrong how long is it going to take to get money back owed to me! I am also in the engineering industry and will most definitely send the parts to a world renowned company

Ok so that is not going to work. Perhaps take it to a different Toyota dealer, and see what they say? If you bought from McCarthy, go to Imperial. Or vice versa.

Hi Guys,

I got another opinion and according to them it is my fault! They dont agree to the km on the pads even tho they say its driver abuse!

And on that note i apologise to Toyota, and have given each of them a call saying sorry!

Thank you.

Just as a matter of curiosity and for the record, please post pics of the LHS disc and pads vs pics of the RHS disc and pads, here in this thread.

Then send them (both the DP and TSA) an e-mail referring them to this thread so that they are aware of your complaint here. It's ridiculous that they should expect only 17000km on a set of brake pads ... this is not a race car we're talking about!
