Adin's new ride

Post by astam »

Hi all,

Adin here from Cape Town and the proudest(?) owner of a 'new' '95 Hilux 2.4 P D/C 4x4. I'm a PhD candidate writing the environmental history of the Cape Guano Islands and I also work in a book store specialising in art, design, photography, architecture and creativity in general.

Been interested in hilux's since before i could drive, so this has been a long time coming!!!! :) :) :)

Ja SuidWes, The second battery of the dual-battery system is mounted in the bonnet on the right. Not too sure of the exact setup, so in time i will have to investigate.

Thanks for the invitation. I'm a tentative yes for Sunday morning the 28th.I Have some important deadlines around that time so i'll confirm next week thu/fri.

Hy Adin,

Looks very, very cool, but I wonder if you should not consider replacing that cone filter with the original Donaldson air filter again? The general consensus is that the Donaldson filter offers about the best filtration of any other type, specifically cone filters.

But Simon or Benny or others will surely offer better advice than I, I am just going on what I have read.

Must admit it is very useful being able to locate the second battery up front though!

Hi

F_D is right, those cone filters does not provide proper filtration off-road. They are more suited for drag racers and street rods   . The other problem that you might have is that you are now sucking hot (less dense) air into the engine. I am not sure if you would realise it at the coast but up here in the Highveld you can notice a drop in power from that. Especially on a hot day your engine do feel sluggish.

If the second battery prevents you from replacing the air cleaner with a proper original Donaldsons, at least fit a snorkel and enclose the cone filter so that you will get cooler and cleaner air into the engine.

Remember that dirty air is just as bad as dirty oil for an engine.

Thanks F_D & Bennie. You are spot-on. The previous owner opted for the 2nd battery instead of the Donaldsons as he and his family only used the vehicle for their annual camping holidays. Space constraints in the cab and bak, not to mention his massive fridge, won out over engine performance I guess.

I may consider taking the 2nd battery out until I get a fridge (it's pretty low on my list right now) and putting the Donaldson back.

For now though, I need to stop smiling so much, stop looking for excuses to drive somewhere and get back to work on the one or two silly things that came up in the RWC test (like the slightly sticky rear, middle- passenger seatbelt stalk!)
