Daihatsu Rocky

Post by henrock »

Good day all.
I'm new to this forum and to 4x4ing!

I have a Daihatsu Rocky 2.8TD and was wondering if any of you know anything about these vehicles.
Toyota apparently had helped develop parts of this 4x4...??? It is my understanding that the engine is a copy or similar to the old Hilux 2.8td. As I have just bought it, I don't know it's off road capabilities other than what I've read.
Any insights or comments are welcome.

Can't comment on the Rocky.
Best way to find out the capabilities is to take her for a jol.

Welcome to the forum. I don't know specifics but the joint ventures between Toyota and Daihatsu is usually just the engines. For instance the Toyota Avanza has the 1.5L Daihatsu motor in and the Yaris the 1.1 Daihatsu engine.

Daihatsu is a subsidiary of Toyota.

The Rocky is one of the better 4x4 built. It is basic and very strong. They still have the solid front axle if in remember correctly and unlike the terios it has 4L. You dont have to be ashamed of that car ever. I have seen what they can do. You must take that car into the bush and give it some good punishment, It was made for that. Some of them came with the balloons in the back suspension to lift it when you want to. The only downside is that that parts is quite scarce. This van was still built like the SFA hilux with only the neccessary. If you need anything on it you must phone Nazeem 0214249601 one of the better mechanics on Daihatsu.
Post some pics.
Enjoy her

Thanks for all the replies!
Should have some pictures availible by the weekend. It seems as it I'll have to get the little Rocky into some sticky places and then try get out???
I found a Daihatsu dealership in Midrand that seems to know enough about this car. The guy there seems to like these 4x4s.

For those that are sceptical about my new purchase, the heart of that Rocky is half TOYOTA...

Your Rocky has the right bits in the right places... like the SFA... now go and use it, and have fun with it ..

And if the motor does not give you enough power, tune it...  or replace it with a 7MGE...

That Daihatsu looks alot like the old suzuki 4x4.
My buddy had one of them old suzukis. Damn , that 4x4 was good on the sand, prob because of its short wheel base, and light frame - but on the road - even worst than my donkey. Thing could not reach 80kph :wth:

I'll have some more pics soon. The Rocky is a little bigger than the old Suzukis. I haven't been on the open road yet, but getting up to 110km didn't take too long. It's not a sports car, but hey, I'll also get there...
The short wheel base will be great off road, or so I've heard. I think the white paintwork will look very nice with some splashes of brown mud!!??

Ok don't kill me this is the truth,
My cousin had one in Zambia and the rocky outclassed the cruiser my uncle had (in the rainy season) he used to get so angry that a 4x4 less than half the price of his cruiser could float over muddy sections without getting stuck. In the dry season the cruiser like the :silent: defender eats up the bush what it was built for.
He sold it after a while due to the need for a vehicle that could carry load, bought a cruiser and now no more fights.

This is a great vehicle in the right hands(it's 30% 4x4 and 50% nut behind the wheel and as always 20% luck)enjoy it!

Good day. I see that you are talking a lot about the Daihatsu Rocky 2.8TD. I also have one, and spares is a big problem. Does anyone know where I can get hold of spares in the future, mostly engine parts?

Also info like workshop manuals, etc?

Thanks

Daihatsu is also sold under the TOYOTA badge in many countries.

Thus they share many parts with Toyotas.

now to find out which model Toyota most resemble your Daihatsu .....

lets hope one of the Daihatsu owners can assist.
