SFA Hilux built for Mach 3

Post by DOELLOOS »

Hi All,

I was just reading up on the SR 71 BlackBird (a mach 3+ aircraft), and found this rather interesting...

"To allow for thermal expansion at the high operational temperatures the fuselage panels were manufactured to fit only loosely on the ground. Proper alignment was only achieved when the airframe heated due to air resistance at high speeds, causing the airframe to expand several inches."

This means that the old SFA Hilux was probably also built with these speeds in mind?

I've had mine on Mach 2 (200km/h) and i can assure you the gaps grow even larger and the wind noise is deafening, stopping it is another story!

Still far too slow for proper expansion to be achieved... You must do at least 2000kmh plus...

The 4Y will never do this...????

I somehow think Jeremy Clarkson would find it easier to kill the fighter jet than a Hilux (well, he couldnt even get that right)

Maybe he should tow one behind a jet and improve the aerodynamics!

Well, they built 32 of these, of which 12 apparently had breakages, and ended up crashing... (because they didn't use the 4Y engine, but then the speed would've been a problem...)

They didn't say anything about the BRAKES....

Well, if they could fit a boat engine on the back of a Hilux, surely they could fit a Jet engine???

It had a Celica Supra 3.0 Turbo motor at that stage(the pic on the left), it could do 200 on an uphill with one gear to go, i took it out before it killed me.
