What will happen here is that the source code will give you only the backbone. Private companies will develop their own specific applications using this technology for which we, the consumer, will pay dearly.

And everyone will still need bandwidth and infrastructure to connect to the info, so it will not be free to the consumer but in the spirit of open source you will pay for the service you use rather then paying for the right to use it as well.
