Put your wallet where you mouths have been for the protectio

Post by Traveler »

There has been plenty verbal and written support for the conservation and protection of Rhino against the scourge of ruthless poachers.

SMS Rhino to 38580 and donate at least R10-00 to the cause towards you say that you are supporting.

Well said Richard. Very well said.

Yes, this is a challenge to all of you. R10 is probably less than the cheapest accessory fitted to your Hilux.

Has this got ANY thing to do with 'gift of the givers'?

I am VERY, VERY wary of anything that Jacaranda do.

Thanks Trevor,

Almal moet ook gaan register vir 'n "petition" op die volgende website:http://www.stoprhinopoaching.com/register.aspx

ADD YOUR VOICE
While this site addresses poaching activities with specific emphasis on what we can achieve as a nation for our rhino in South Africa, poaching pressure on rhino populations in Zimbabwe is just as rife. Other African countries have also reported a marked increase in poaching occurrences, and even the small populations of highly endangered Indian, Javan and Sumatran rhino have not been left unaffected.

We need to take a hard line, zero tolerance approach to poaching in order to ensure the continued existence of many species, not only those currently on the endangered list.

Members of the public, of the wildlife and aviation industries, or whoever you may be, please fill in the form below. (You will get this form on the website link)

To all the overseas visitors to this site, the rhino that are left belong to our Earth. We are merely their custodians. - International participation and support on every level is an indispensable component to the fight against rhino poaching and the illegal trade of rhino horn to the Far East.

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT – FINDING SOLUTIONS
The unprecedented increase in poaching is a direct result of two (well meaning) control actions put into effect by the Department of Environment and Tourism. The first, the implementation of the TOPS (Threatened or Protected Species) permitting system at the beginning of 2008, closed the widely abused option of hunting as a tool to obtain horn. The second action, a national moratorium issued in February 2009, placed an indefinite ban on the trade of individual rhino horns, any derivatives or products of the horns within South Africa. These measures were put in place after the CITES ban on international rhino horn trade was not successful in stopping the rhino slaughter.

Banning, traditionally seen as an overall solution to ending a problem, creates ruthless money-hungry syndicates determined to feed a black-market demand. Considering the number of well-organised gangs operating throughout South Africa, banning will not be the solution that puts an end to rhino poaching. Bust one syndicate, and another moves in to take its place.

It is naïve to think that diplomatic initiatives will have the immediate impact that is needed to halt the current escalation in poaching trends. Changing the mind set and traditions in South East Asia, entrenched since 200BC, will take many more years than our rhino can afford. CITES regulations and national legislation have not and will not save rhino lives at grass roots level. Considering that for every bloodied horn in the hands of a poacher a rhino has died, and that for every horn reaching the Far East substantial amounts of money have been made by ruthless organised criminals, there is growing support from conservationists and role-players far and wide for South Africa to hold an annual sale of stockpiled horn to supply the demand and SAVE their rhino. Controlled trade of harvested horns from natural mortalities and harvested horns (rhino can be successfully de-horned every three years) supplied by registered members of the commercial game ranching industry will virtually eliminate poaching pressure in our private, national and provincial parks. The millions of Rand generated from these sales can be invested back into rhino projects, conservation initiatives and community development.

The entire legal trade issue still needs to be properly researched. Although controversial, StopRhinoPoaching.com will highlight the idea of regulated trade in rhino horn for the simple reason that even if we don’t necessarily like it, it might just be the only way we will keep our rhino alive.

For those who can't tune in on Jacaranda 94.2 - Martin Bester and Barney Simon went to Pilansberg this week-end as part of their anti-poaching support. They went to tag / chip the rhinos and did 3 when the chopper spotted a rhino with a serious limp. They went to investigate and the rhino was actually shot in the leg - blood oozing out of the wound, but this oak was still keeping up - running with the other animals. They treated the wound and gave some anti-boitics, as well as some pain killer to last for about 7 days.

This just confirms how ignorant some of our fellow human beings are against the animals that we are suppose to care for and look after. The anger it creates when hearing things like this will make one shoot poachers with-out even asking questions - like the Bots Defense Force do with poachers - shoot to kill and the maybe ask questions.
