Tyre pressure monitors
What is your opinion of these items and do you have one fitted? What are the pro's and cons? What is the best option on the market.

Re: Tyre pressure monitors
Niel, I've looked at them many times, but at the price, they really are not a priority.

Re: Tyre pressure monitors
I suppose they have their place, but as Heinrich says they are quite expensive, doing a job that I do every hour to 90 minutes anyway.
In the event of a sudden blow-out, the warning of the TPMS will only distract you as you try to keep the vehicle on its wheels while trying to stop. Also it is another little guage/display that wants you to keep an eye on it, in stead of on the road.

Re: Tyre pressure monitors
EK het 'n stel gehad (batterye nou pap), sal weer insit.
Koste is so 1.5 keer van een band.

You can program the tireguard per wheel and diffrent preasures on front, back and trailer wheels. Programing is quick.

Re: Tyre pressure monitors
Ek sal twee vat .

Forgot to add that and additional sensor will cost R 150 per sensor.
The Tire Guard system can apparently only show one sensor “readings” at a time and you have to scroll thru the list. It will alert you. Mark will contact you shortly.

Re: Tyre pressure monitors
time to get some life into this thread .. :)
By all accounts the "internal sensors" are prone to a short life span due to our local tire shop labourers ....
The valves on the metal rimms of the SRX Hilux stops in a tight spot - doubt if you will be able to fit the external sensors on these valves ....
So what options are left ... ?

Re: Tyre pressure monitors
Thx for the pics!!
It sure looks good, I really hope they work as well as they look.
I had a Smartire system on my bakkie, it was a schlep to install, because the sensors are quite big and fitted with a long clamp around the rim. Broke the first one we tried to install because we didn't know how to do it. It was also quite expensive (about R 2500), and the sensor batteries were not replaceble. It was also a schlep to get the sensors mated to the receiver, one had to deflate the tyre and inflate again. Also one had to be carefull when you remove the tyre again that you don't break the sensor.
But even with the schlep it was worth it, alerted me a few times of punctures. It was also interesting to note the temperature of the tyres, the sun on a tyre makes a difference. But I also have jbultraseal in now, and I don't want to see that mess trying to install the sensors around the rim.
I'll wait for the feedback before ordering, hope it is positive.
Cheers,
C

Was out on the road this morning...in the rain, and the unit performed OK. Pressure readings are not 100% the same but there could be a number of factors affecting em. Spring in valve being one.

Even if it isn't that accurate, as long as it will warn me of an imminent blow-out it would work for me.

Re: Tyre pressure monitors
Accuracy? Chris, the pressure sensors do not 100% agree with my tyre pressure gauge. Seems they under read, and that is me using x3 different gauges. But as mentioned could have to do with my valves as well, which are not all the same with age. One fitted they appear to be consistent.cprinsloo wrote:Thx. Accuracy? The temp reading changes as the road surface changes and also once the tyres are stationary.
User friendly? once it is set....and you have read the instruction booklet it's fairly straight forward.
Recommend it? IMO it's good value for money. I have never had any experience with any other unit but for R1350.00, I would say yes
Dislikes:
1. The valve on the valve stem could get damaged during a trail, but I am told one can have shorter valve stem's fitted.
2. There is only a 12v charger supplied and not a 240v
3. There is no facility to override the the alarm when you deflate your tyres. But I suppose you could just chuck it in the canopy.
4. One tyre reading at a time

Yes Niel you can imo it's a schlep. I know some systems have an override button that says 'off-road' so it won't beep every now and again.Niel wrote:Can't you just re-program it?OOOOMS wrote: There is no facility to override the the alarm when you deflate your tyres.

Re: Tyre pressure monitors
Got my set today. Seems it will do the job. Not too much of a schlep to change target pressure for off-road, if its really a problem then just swicth off the unit or unscrew the sensors. I like that the batteries can be replaced.
My previous system warned me quite a few times, so I still think it's worth every sent.
Thx again for the info.
Cheers,
C

Re: Tyre pressure monitors
Hi,
It's been a few months now that I've had mine installed, relatively easy to configure, and it did its job by alerting me to a puncture on my last trip.
Like the fact that the batteries can be replaced.
Cheers,
C
