What tyres to buy? Thoughts please!

Post by Pierré »

Hi all.

I am in the market for new tyres for my Toyota bakkie. I have done a search on the forum and tried to read as many discussions as possible. Now I am more confused than before, so please help. Your input and personal experiences would be much appreciated.

I always thought that my next set of tyres would be BFG A/T. But now that I have to spend that money, I need to know that I am doing the right thing.

My driving is 80% + tar and the other 20% is gravel roads, and when the budget allows it my family and I like to do a 4x4 trail.
Mileage is fairly important because I cannot afford to fit tyres every year. I am not a speed freak, my bakkie doesn't allow me. So my driving style I would hope is avg.

Is the hard compound vs. poor road handling ability on the BFG A/T in the wet really such a big problem? (That was one of the complaints I picked up in the discussions)

I have looked at the:

1. BFG A/T
2. Bridgestone dueler.
3. Goodyear AT/SA
4. Maxxis (AT) (Haven't found lot of info on this one.)

Your thoughts please!

Thanks
Pierré

Hi Pierre, as jy goeie km's wil he kry BF All Terrain bande, hulle is wel bietjie duurder as ander brands maar ek's seker jy sal maklik 100 000+ kry.

Nogal baie pad geraas na so 40 000km,s.
BFG is baas

This is what my Worldcontacts looked like after 19 ooo km. Both rear tires were showing signs of severe wear after 15k, then during our Namibia trip the two rear tires started throwing off blocks ..... :(

MOST of these kilos were on gravel and trails.

I have only done 1 000km on the BFG tires, but happy so far.

I bought the BFG on the recommendation of a number of friends that DO many trails and have had a number of sets of BFG.

BF's se padhou is ok.

Ek beplan ook om onlangs 'n paar BF Goodrich te koop maar kan nie besluit op All Terrain of Mud Terrain nie. Doen so 90% teerpad en 10% grondpad. Besluite, besluite........

PS. whatever tyres you fit, rotate every 5,000km and you will get best possible km's.

Hi all.

Thank you all for your input and advice. It REALLY helped alot.
I have decided on BFG A/T and I got a really sweet deal at TWT Wonderboom (comparing to other places that I got quotes from).
Tyres + fitment for R6000 incl.

Thanks again. I'll place some pics when the BFG's are fitted. Can't wait its going to look so .........!

Cheers vir eers.

Size dependant, that is a good deal.

But whatever TWT tells you; rotate every 5,000km that comes from Michelin SA directly. They negated my warranty claim cause I rotated at 10,000km (as TWT told me).

Jarus.

True what Heinrich said, price is definitely size dependent.
I bought 30x9.5 R15, and no don't know anyone there and did not really haggle.

The sales person asked what I was quoted by other dealers. I told him and also told him what I have to spend.
He was quite for a minute and then said he wants the business and will do it for R6000.

I must say: that I appreciate from him, wanting the business and are willing to do a deal.

Regards.

I fitted BFG's A/T on the Jeep about three months ago and up to now cannot complain one bit. Actually it would have been nice if I could have fitted mine for R6k

It really makes a big difference when going off-road!
