My working Hilux round 2-Platberg 24m mast, Harrismith
Just feel like sharing what a days work is for me. This is a 24m guyed lattice mast on Platberg at Harrismith. I build this mast to serve the farmers in the Harrismith, Kestell, Bethlehem and Reitz area, they use it for farm security communication
Pic 1: Assembly of 24m mast on ground.
a Close-up of the construction (I manufacture these myself)
a View from my "office" with Harrismith in the back (can't see it from this angle)
My Hilux, always willing to work.
24m standing with Isaak in orange at 9m.

Cool! ...... You must go through an awful lot of cable for guy-ropes, .... I'm guessing about 260m for a 24m tower like that one if you are running three sets of three, or about 140m for three sets of two as it appears to be the case on that particular unit.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.
Life is like a jar of Jalapeño peppers ... what you do today, might burn your ass tomorrow.
Don't take life too seriously ..... no-one gets out alive.
It's not about waiting for storms to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.
And be yourself ..... everyone else is taken!

Re: My working Hilux round 2-Platberg 24m mast, Harrismith
I only use 2 sets of cable on a 24m, from 27m up I use more, This design can go up to 72 meters. I used 144m of H/Duty galvanized cable on this 24m mast. I usually buy a roll of 1000m at a time.Mud Dog wrote:Cool! ...... You must go through an awful lot of cable for guy-ropes, .... Ok, so my guess was quite close. 72m ! Wow! That's high! ... and the weight on the base sections must be tremendous, especially with the downward force of the guy-ropes. Amazing that it stands up to it.
Have you ever had any that have collapsed / folded / snapped or anything like that?

Re: My working Hilux round 2-Platberg 24m mast, Harrismith
Never had any of my own collapsed or anything bad happen to them, but I had to replace many older masts from different manufactures that fell in high winds. Mainly because of bad maintenance. The biggest enemy for any mast is rust and wind. you will be amazed to see how much vibration is there on a mast on windy days. The vibration is caused by the wind blowing against the guy wires. The vibration can undo bolts and nuts, believe it or not. And in good time the structure will give in. I usually service my masts after the rain season by climbing it to the top and tighten all the bolts and treat any rust if there is any and re-tension the guy wires or replace if necessary.Mud Dog wrote:Ok, so my guess was quite close. 72m ! If a tower is in good shape with no loose bolts and no rust from the start, the life of the structure is 100 years.2.8 d/cab SFA wrote:awesome, scary those huge towers for ESKOM that get no maintanance

This is how I lift my masts, setup a ginpole of 9m, run cables through a pulley at the top, winch up with my bakkie winch.

Can anyone explain to me on how to upload a video clip with Photobucket, I took a clip while winching the mast up but can't get it to upload.
The clip is not very good, held the camera in one hand, foot on the brake, winch control in the other hand and watching for anything that can go wrong while winching.

Amper so iets. . .maar voel vir my net baie erger want daar is so baie dinge wat kan skeef loop jy weet eintlik nie waar om orals te kyk nie.Barrie wrote:Dit klink amper soos "Hou my dop! Check hierrie move!"

So die beste is maar net maak seker voor jy begin om te lig. Die slegste is maar as die wind waai as jy begin lig, en bo-op n berg waai die wind flippen altyd.
