ORRA Radio Which one......... IT'S HERE
Ok here it is....
I have decided on getting a radio but have a little problem....
Handheld
Fitted
Which one
Handheld gives you the fredom to be away from the vehicle and still be in radio contact......
BUT can be misplaced or stolen easier......
Fitted is always with you and no flat battery......
What are your thoughts and comments.......
I need advice to make the decision.....

I have both but prefer to use the mobile unit as it's louder and better range. But it is also more expensive

If I had to choose between the two, it would without a doubt be a fixed radio

Re: ORRA Radio Which one
I also had that question. What I did was to get the Mobile/Fitted unit for now, and later I'll get some handhelds.
At this stage the radio is just for my self and for my use, but later I'll get another set of handhelds for people that will drive with me.
(Besides, the truck looks cooler with the Antenna than you with a handheld )

Does that tuning need to be done with the antenna mounted on the vehicle?
Or can it be done in the factory. How specific is it? 449mm or 451mm would that matter?

Re: ORRA Radio Which one
It depends on the type of antenna and the frequencies. It is quite specific but they are usually trimmed to allow for some leverage. In your example the frequency difference would be in the region of 1MHz. Some quarter wave antennas can handle frequency differences of about 3MHz either way of the tuned frequencyRoyco wrote:Does that tuning need to be done with the antenna mounted on the vehicle?

The antenna performs optimal at a specific frequency to which it is tuned thus giving you the optimal range.
If you antenna is not tune in the range you are using, you will damage your radio as you will get reflected power.
Signal Wave Ratio is a term used when tuning the antenna. We ideally want a 1:1 ratio but values up to 1:1.5 is acceptable but not ideal.

Re: ORRA Radio Which one
Guys, don't worry - we will pre-tune the antenna for you. The antennas have a bandwidth of 10MHz, which allows for plenty of leeway. Ideally, we would tune it for ORRA 1 & 2 (the "new* ORRA frequencies and you should only use these frequencies in future and never the old ORRA frequency, which is now moved to channel 3 & channel 7. But at this stage there will be a requirement to use this frequency to communicate with older radios that have not yet be tuned for the new ORRA channels.

Re: ORRA Radio Which one
No reason to be confused. Lets say the original ORRA frequency is 123MHz and the second one they got is 130MHz. The setup previously was like this:Royco wrote:OK, now I'm confused... according to an EXCELLENT source, this is what I understood: Source:CasKru wrote:Just a small correction Eric... the old ORRA frequency is now on 5,6 & 7
viewtopic.php?f=14&t=22665" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Which means the new channels are 1,5,7,8 ?
Ch1 123MHz no tone
Ch2 123MHz with tone
Ch3 130MHz no tone
Ch4 130MHz with tone
Now that ORRA received the 3rd frequency, let's say 132MHz, they have decided to reshuffel the channels and make the two newer frequencies the main channels. The structure is now like this:
Ch1 130MHz Tone1 (Old Ch4)
Ch2 132MHz Tone1
Ch3 130MHz Tone2
Ch4 132MHz Tone2
Ch5 123MHz Tone1 (Old Ch2)
Ch6 123MHz Tone2
Ch7 123MHz no tone (Old Ch1)
Ch8 130MHz no tone (Old Ch3)
Hope this helps.
PS: Those are not the actual frequencies. They have been changed to protect the innocent

Ah, you (and Eric) are talking FREQUENCIES, which don't mean much to me - as I don't know them.
I refer to the channels, which I can understand.
So OLD CH4 may (or may not) be able to communicate with NEW CH1 - depending on what tone was used.

Re: ORRA Radio Which one
An aerial question.
I want to fit one to repulse, but do not want to drill holes in the body..... Cannot afford the diamond tip dril required for the thick steel.
What other ways of fitting without drilling?

Re: ORRA Radio Which one
Bull bar? We have bonnet mounts and gutter mounts - does Repulse have gutters in the roof? We also have glass mount for windscreens, but your very best antenna mount is one smack-bang in the middle of the roof. The higher the antenna is mounted, the better your radio range.

Re: ORRA Radio Which one......... IT'S HERE
Johno, I called the Staff to come see the radio that was in their own very hands just yesterday - Patsy (Parcel Packer!) was delighted and Jankie (Workshop Manager) just smiled. I told Patsy she had forgotten to pack the Microphone (Hey - this *has* happened!) but she pointed to the box and said "Daar's sy!!".
Please take note of those extra notes I sent you - in fact, I will post them somewhere on the forum too.
Thanks for your order and I know you will put the radio to excellent use! :)

Indeed... removed them, cleaned the radio (had one or two drops of mud on it) and cleaned and resprayed the brackets again.
They are black in colour. I'm working on a quick release bracket so I can use the radio in my house as well for the radio amateur stuff

Cassie, you know this is not going to work! Grab one of those TK7160 radios while I still have stock - Kenwood has no more and we are down now to about 35 models left...
Just think - 128 channels at your fingertips!
