Watse groote shackle gebruik 'n mens vir recovery? Is die 3.25t shackle groot genoeg of moet 'n mens eerder die 4.75t shackle gebruik :?:

Neil, I tend to agree with you. The biggest shackle that I can lay my hands on is a 150t... Problem is they weigh 140kg each with a pin diameter of 108mm :o: :laugh2:

Cassie, ek is besig om 'n bumper te ontwerp/bou vir my IFS, so ek is oop vir voorstelle. Ek is nog nie eers by my hardboard model nie - alles is nog net op papier :oops:

:thumbup: Yes more than safe . the only problem with the smaller shackle is to fit some slings or recovery straps .

I have realized. I have 2X 3.25t shackles and it is difficult to get the kinetic strap in.

The top one...less tools to get it loose when it's tight (screwdriver or a Freestate vernier)

The bottom one needs 2 spanners

Agree, top shackle. The bottom one will be nice for a more permanent fixture, that is why it has a split pin. For quickly on and off the first.

Meet die grootte van die gat waar die shackle moet vaskom.
Maak seker die pin kan daar deurgaan. Baie ouens koop die groot shackle net om uit te vind die pin is te dik om deur die gat te gaan.
Indien jy jou eie hegtingspunte bou of jy bereid is om die gate groter te maak (indien te klein), gaan dan vir die grootste een.

Nee dis reg Pieter. Ek gaan 'n 32mm gat maak en dan 'n bush in sit met ID = 22mm, i.e. bush se wanddikte is dan 5mm :thumbup:

Talking about ratings, I see on our supplier's rating sheet that the Safety Factor on our shackles is 6:1
The way I understand it, it means that it can actually take a load 6x more than what it is rated for, but they rate it at a 6th of the load to be on the safe side.

Maak sin, ek koop die shackles by 'n plaaslike maatskapy wat hyskraan toerusting verkoop, dus moet dit dan juis ge"rate" wees omdat lewens in gevaar kan wees as dit breek.

There is a white IFS in Langebaan which has almost that size shackles on the back. They just a little bit smaller, but almost that size.

That kind of shackle has a 5:1 or 6:1 Static Safety Factor or a Safe Working Load Ratio. They are designed for use in industry (cranes etc). The breaking point of the shackle is then 5x or 6x the working load indicated this provides some margin for error as well as the ability to withstand small shocks. They are not actually designed with dynamic loads in mind (that is sudden shocks) but rather gradual increases in load (when picking up a container for instance) hence the rating in kilograms or tonnes.

Shackles designed for dynamic loads (sudden shocks) are used more typically in the rope access area, they have a 10:1 Static Safety Factor and their breaking strain is given in kiloNewton (kN), which measures the force they can withstand.

Anyway, with that in mind, the kind of loads placed on these shackles even during recoveries using kinetic snatches do not exceed the Static Safety Factor and they are safe to use.
