Hey... Leeroy had an awesome run first up. Giniel's power steering stopped working 30km's into the race but even with that... they didn't loose too much time.. hats of to them

Re: Dakar 2014
In Dakar time lost, especially in the first few stages of the race, is bad news.
He needs a trouble free run to move up in position; if a 3rd the way through the race and down to 5th place his chances are slim.
Now is the time for Everything keeps going right - TOYOTA.

Good to see our boy is making up for lost time. I think despite the first days gliches, he did well with only a 15 min delay. He should get ahead of the number 2 guy as well.

Re: Dakar 2014
Looks like Poulter came in 3rd on stage 3 and Giniel 13th.
Peter Hansel had problems and came in 27th.
Giniel is still 6th overall and Poulter moves into 10th.
Roma takes lead.
Rundle not in yet.
Visser in the Ford is out, rolled on a dune yesterday and had to be airlifted to hospital - suspected neck injuries, but he's all good and will be released from hospital tomorrow.

Re: Dakar 2014
Two Hilux's and two South Africans in the top 10 - great acheivement!
Be wonderful if they could both move into the top five!
This should be given a 'little' more exposure in the abysmal 30 minute slot each day.

They just concentrate on a few favourites. Especially on the french and italian guys.
I'm surprised there was no mention of the Ford's crash and that the guys had to be hospitalised.
Either way, the Toyos are gaining momentum now! Let's hope there are no punctures and stuff.

I watched again this morning and to my surprise they actually mentioned and had "sample" footage of both Giniel and Leeroy but hardly 10 seconds combined

Daily 30 minute coverage: - if you take out the advertisements and some of the un-necessary items, then the actual viewing time of the Dakar is about 22 minutes.
This is all you get each day of one of the greatest sporting events in the world.

This is not good: South African Leeroy Poulter's Toyota has remained at a standstill at km 47 for over 20 minutes now. This is much longer than what it takes to change a tyre and suggests the Toyota's problems are serious.

This will help Giniel: And now it is Stéphane Peterhansel's Mini which has ground to a halt for five minutes, just before km 28 of today's special. Is he having trouble with the course or was it simply a puncture?

For the non-twitters like me, you can check Giniel's tweets here:

Nothing mentioned for today... so I hope he's still racing!

Van Niekerk op sy KTM is al deur CP2.
Cassie, hopelike is jy reg. Het al hulle tracking verkeerd gesien in die verlede. Dalk is daai Hilux so vinnig deur hulle het hom nie gesien nie?

Re: Dakar 2014
Seems all is fine.. must be faulty equipment on Dakar side:
Looks like they are about to start with the second section of the day
11:16 Cars: State of affairs before the neutralised section
With the competitors quickly approaching the second part of the special, a small group has formed at the front of the car race. Nasser Al-Attiyah, Carlos Sainz, Giniel de Villiers, Stéphane Peterhansel and Nani Roma are fighting for the stage victory, with just five minutes between the Qatari at the front and the Spaniard at the rear. The next 284 km will be decisive.
Looks like they are about to start with the second section of the day

Poulter broke suspension and shock at around 75km in, had to wait for the backup truck to come to repair.

As it stands Giniel is 7th over all for today... seems it was a difficult run again today. Poulter is running right at the back but at least hy is running again. His race is over but at least he can now gooi mielies for the stage wins

Re: Dakar 2014
Van Niekerk on his KTM is also doing really well.
He was in 7th for a large part of the day yesterday, unfortunately ended the day in 13th position and is currently in 12th position overall. Still a darn impressive performance.

Re: Dakar 2014
12:15 Cars: End of part 1: few finishers, big gaps
Nani Roma has put in a good performance so far today, since on completion of the first half of the special stage,he boasts a lead of 10’33' over second placed driver Giniel de Villiers. However already 32’39' separate him from his nearest team-mate Nasser Al-Attiyah and 34’22' from Stéphane Petehansel. It will be worse still for Carlos Sainz who is about to arrive at the end of the first half.
Go Giniel.... they are making up some time on the others
