We used the old Bedfords and Mogs where the load bins were packed with sandbags for blast protection .... not very effective. The Buffel with 'V' hull and seats only came along later when we were CF campers.

Wonder whatever happened to all those old Centurion tanks the SADF used to have .... anyone have an idea? Melted down for steel to build other armoured vehicles?

Re: Army pics, who has interesting ones?
Andy, I went to the Rand show last year, specifically to go see the new Olifant (new being the upgrade to the boys you see here on which I served in '89. The upgraded tanks as in use today were then being given their final field tests)
25 years on, no further improvements. In fact, the only servicable tank the SA Army has today is the single "show" model.
At 7Div outside Bloem we had to service the tanks that were in storage while on our non-border service rotation - there were HUNDREDS in those hangars, some brand new, some battlescarred, all in working order.
Yes, I also wonder what happened to all those 56tonne monsters.

Re: Army pics, who has interesting ones?
Mickey, those are some of the ones I'm referring to ... dated from WW11 .... V12 RR motors if I'm not mistaken. Then there were also hundreds upon hundreds of Sarrison APC's (6 wheels, not tracks) .... also WW11 vintage.

Re: Army pics, who has interesting ones?
AFAIK the old Centurion's petrol engine was replaced with a diesel and then renamed "Olifant"
The system that keeps the barrel shooting on target while driving and even doing 360's, was developed and built locally, it is now used worldwide
The Olifant was the only mine-proof vehicle we had.

Re: Army pics, who has interesting ones?
Yes, STAB (stabilising) system locally developed, fitted to MK1, along with 40litre diesel motor. 45kp/h top speed, felt like 3 times as much in the veldt. STAB could keep turret and 105mm gun on target while moving, also had laser range finder. All this upgraded and new suspension system was fitted to MK1b, which still serves today.
While I was doing my service 2 projects were developed, Rooikat and a new tank which would give the Yanks headaches - could hit a 1m high concrete block at 60kp/h and still remain on target - project was canned for political reasons.
25 years later, and I can still recall all the gunner setups and drills and equipment...

Re: Army pics, who has interesting ones?
I see an old hippo amongst Rogers old pitchas, wich was probably the first v shaped blast resistant vehicle. I do not remember the truck in one of the following pitchas. We aso used smaller vehicles that were powered by 2.6 Rover petrol engines that could carry about 5 or 7 personel. We had a Hippo on the base at Ulungwelume that only ran on two of the 6 cylinders. Someone had to change the gears from inside the engine compartment. Little good that would do you if you hit a landmine. The Bedfords with the sandbags were first used in Rhodesia then Caprivi before Avomboland beame active. The learning curve took us to be the best fighting force in Africa at the very least and the top in armoured fighting vehicles anywhere in the world. The Caspir and the Buffel were world leaders though the Buffel was a little light for the terraine, especially Angola and the eastern bush areas north of Okatoppi east of oom Willie se pad.
The Namibian govt. with the assistance of Germany eventually started building the Wolf and somethig else based on the Caspir with a locomotive engine and gearbox, but it was so powerful that it broke itself under the stresses, especially in the stony areas of koukaveldt. They were not too bad in the sand though. Memories are plenty in that erra.

Re: Army pics, who has interesting ones?
Allan, I think you're right. Now that I look at Mickey's pics more closely, the suspension and base is almost certainly a centurion ..... looks like only the turret has been modified a bit. That said, I never had much to do with motorized artillery / APC's other than to direct artillery fire and know how to immobilize almost any unit in production during those years.Hoppy wrote:AFAIK the old Centurion's petrol engine was replaced with a diesel and then renamed "Olifant"

Re: Army pics, who has interesting ones?
Sorry, sien ek't twak gepraat - Olifant het V12 tubodiesel, 29liter. 551kw @ 2300rpm.
Upgrade from Centurions (bought from Jordan, India too) includes new engine, transmission, suspension, replaced 84mm gun with 105mm, new fire control system, incl passive night fighting equipment (I could never see s**t through them), night driving equipment.
My biggest gripe was with the "bokna**ers" who used the tanks as target practice during live movements. The outer bins are not armoured, so our clothes, food and most importantly, beer cans were often riddled with R4 holes...

We sometimes had a practice where they would walk along the tanks.I quick step on the brake and then you fire the 105.All the bokna**ers flat on ther backsMy biggest gripe was with the "bokna**ers" who used the tanks as target practice during live movements. Re: Army pics, who has interesting ones?
Yup, George, that worked really well. What also worked nicely was if the loader then immediately chucked the 105mm shell out of the pistol port. The infantry boys would get into fistfights as to who would keep the shell as a memento - and grab it while it is still smoking hot. We heard many a scream from the greedy little b*ggers!
Ah, good days! Actually, no...

Re: Army pics, who has interesting ones?
Brings back memories .... many of them not good .... lost a few friends up there.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.
Life is like a jar of Jalapeño peppers ... what you do today, might burn your ass tomorrow.
Don't take life too seriously ..... no-one gets out alive.
It's not about waiting for storms to pass. It's about learning to dance in the rain.
And be yourself ..... everyone else is taken!

Why would anyone take a pic of a Varkpan, except that it looks lekker without food?
