What a shift of mindset!

Post by Donkey »

What a shift in mindset I had to do? Or was it more disbelief than anything? :shock2:

You may or may not know that Ignition Channel is going 24 hours from the first weekend of July. That means more shows, content, interviews, etc. Also it means a few changes to existing programs, Ignition GT will now have a new feature called Ignition Humpz, which will look at 4x4's in their intended environment. For this they chose the Land Rover Experience track out in Kyalami. I have been afforded the opportunity to drive various of these new vehicles that come into the market and do a review on each, based on performance, opinion, latest technology, etc.

The first three are the Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.0-ltr turbo direct-injection V6 Common-rail 2014, Nissan Patrol P/U 3.0Di 4x4 2014 and the Range Rover Sport 375kW 5.0-ltr V8 Supercharged 2014.

Jeep and Range Rover are beasts of pure comfort and electronics, I felt like a pilot, while the Nissan is as basic as my old 1800 Stallion, except it has electric windows, aircon, diesel motor with turbo and intercooler - I think they are looking at competing with the Cruiser stable.

What my mind could not get around was how these heavily modern state-of- the-art, electronic driven machines could handle the track, it is nothing extreme, but nonetheless a 4x4 track with side slopes, axcle twisters, water crossing, inclines/declines and loose rocky inclines and some large smooth rocks. You just press a button and the car adjusts itself either to crawl and/or suspension height :shock2: :shock2: :shock2: , and this they did effortlessly, in some cases without even having to press the pedal. Talk about torque! What does irritate though is all the alarms going off as if something is wrong! What was even weird was having to rate them as good and so advanced, this being from a guy who only drives Toyota. The Nissan was just plain simple, just with the smell of a new car.

But nonetheless an awesome experience, I must just polish my presenting skills, more on the delivery side because I tend to talk while thinking what to say next. Practice, practice, practice.

This is all new to me and I hope to learn, improve and have fun along the way. More importantly, I hope Ignition, and the public, will be happy with my role.

There is also an interview I did with Dstv on their new presenters, which took place at the old Bosvark, made sure I had my Hilux4x4 shirt - because not only is this my home, but you have shaped me into what I know now about 4x4'ing (still more to learn), and I always value your friendship and input :yahoo:

I thank you :bye:

Thank you guys, lucky fish yes. I would have never otherwise driven these machines, besides the cost factor but mainly because of the brand. A real eye opener

When is your piece airing on tv ? I see you inserted a pic of the Grand Cherokee gearshift on your post, it is quite something. That GC you drove is the excact same model I recently bought, Im interested to hear another Hilux drivers opinion on the vehicle. I am still impressed every time I drive mine. Boat loads of power ouens, you may not like the badge but you must admit its a sexy beast. JM2CW.

The shoot was only yesterday, so I can't say for sure, but what I know for sure is the That 4x4 Show, which will start first weekend July. I loved the feel of the steering wheel in my hands, the torque, interior is posh and you can see a lot is put into it. Found the electronics intimidating though, remember on the Hilux you don't have so much. I suppose the longer you have the better one adjusts, it's difficult to focus on one brand and trully embrace it in one day. I'm still trying to get my jaw up, really amazed at those electronics. It makes a good overlanding car, not the sort I would want to take deep in the bush and get it scratched. At least that is my opinion.

Thanks Pieter, when I started 4x4'ing it was/still is for my love for the outdoors, and has been mostly passion, little did I know all this would happen. It's not like I went looking for it, it came to me. What I love about it is all this happens on my off days and doesn't affect my full-time job.

As for the Subaru, also check out an article in July Leisure Wheels copy by GG van Rooyen, exctly my sentiments on the car. So I'm not too far off for an ametuer :laugh2:

That Range Rover is quite special, ain't it? Did you get to drive it on road?

I have not driven it off road, but on tar, jojojojojojo!!!!

Look, in my time I have driven all sorts of powerfull machines, M3,5,6 C63, E55, etc. but nothing even remotely compares with the new RRS Supercharged!

It is hard to imagine a 2ton+ car can accelerate so fast and then stick to the road like...well you know the rest!

If you are a diesel fan, raise your hand.
If you aren't raising your hand, raise your standards!

A 4x4 is merely a machine that enables you to get stuck further away from civilization.

Landy Discovery, might be the TD5 .... ooops, I dont know te one from the other ... sorry, back on topic - I have seen some competent 4x4's STRUGGLING, and he just press some buttons and that beast idles up and over some scary terrain WITH that block of flats in tow !

the modern electronics are VERY impressive.
