Pest control advice needed.

Post by zepplin »

I have a feeling that this is going to lead to many private messages considering the current trend of preserving wildlife.

I have used some very dubious and sometimes extreme methods to get rid of these unwelcome visitors in the past which did seem to work as I have not had an issue for the past 6 years.

This guy arrived about a month ago and seems to be rather persistant.

Any advice on how to effectively send him on his way?

Let me put it this way, a pool hose connected to the exhaust on the GS didn't work, LP gas down the hole followed by a match didn't work.

Does anyone have a spare thunderflash lying around?

A long time ago I used a product called Phostoxin, which killed the buggers if they did,t close up their tunnels to block off the gas. To try overcome this, one had to put a treatment down the hole at every mound .... became a ridiculously expensive exercise that still only had moderate success. These little guys are clever enough to close the burrow quickly and block of the toxic fumes / gas.

What I have had the most success with is as you already mentioned, a pool hose attached to the exhaust of a vehicle, but then I open up the furthest holes / mounds as well and check that the fumes are travelling through the full tract of burrows. What might help is to up the revs just a tad so that the flow is strong enough to hamper or prevent them closing off the tunnels.

Remember also that in many instances, there are more than just one mole in a burrow system, and although you may be successful in eradicating them all except one, that remaining one can lead you to think that you have had no success, so repetition is needed if the mounds persist.

Yes, I believe that the Golden Mole is protected, but it's really impractical to try catch and re-locate them and the option of leaving them be is a no-go. Your lawns will become undulating veld very quickly and your mower blades will take a hammering. Unfortunately one has to eradicate them by extermination.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

The Phostoxin seems to be a little hit & miss for the reasons you mentioned Andy.

The only thing I haven't tried is dry ice to dioxide them the hell out of here.

My Staffi's were also good at getting them.....but that's all happening upstairs now.

Getting another dog is not an option. Too emotional when they go.

Anyway, they got a solid dose of some GS treatment again.

Now I'm just worried that with the GS running unleaded fuel, it's not going to have the desired effect being 'environmentally friendly' enol! :alvarin:
