Creating website and starting small company

Post by dustbuster »

Hi Everyone

Thinking of starting a side line business doing mechanical/structural & piping design and detailing work at home afterhours. I do the odd private job from time to time but would like to take the next step and see how much work I can get before I can hopefully start my own company and do it full time.

first I would like to Create a website first to see what the response will be and home much work I can get from other areas

who could point me in the right direction on setting up a website is this something I should do myself or get I done for me?
also any info on starting up a business would be helpful!!!

thanks

Dean, I would secure the domain first, in other words, what you are going to use as a company name.
For example ours is "ChaberCanvas".

Good luck with the new adventure.

Dean, It's very easy to create your own website from scratch and there is a lot of tutorials on Youtube on how to.

Like Neil said, first register the domain (you can do this through your ISP or Afrihost for instance). You can host a site for as little as about R9 per month (static pages and no database).

Best of good fortune with your new venture!

(I was going to say "good luck", but luck has little to do with it - diligence, effort and perseverance create your own 'luck'. ;-) )

Have a look at this: http://www.earnster.ninja/amember/aff/go/njgrobler" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I have known Peter Carathurers for almost 10 years and is currently busy with his Earnster.Ninja program - I thought I knew a thing or two about business but very limited web based info.

Now I know my business knowledge need some serious paradigm shifts and I am learning this web driven business fast!

Building a website is easy, uploading is easy, the difficult part is building it so that Google can find it... My buddy works for a digital marketing firm, and it gets über Technical. I lost track while he tried to explain webs, sockets, tag words, pPC, word bidding and all that! If you want people to find it by googling say "structural piping" or whatever, these need to be set up properly.

JIP !

Best to work via somebody that KNOWS the ropes.

Your next step is to talk to an accountant about setting up a small business. I went the Sole Prop route. It has its advantages, but also some disadvantages .... best to speak to a knowledgable person to get the RIGHT advise.

and then to separate your private life and your business life - at the bank .... I initially went for a Business Savings account at ABSA. Hefty transaction fees on transations, but almost nothing if you have a quiet month. Also easy to open. BUT !!! ABSA sucks big time when you want to deliver something to a SADC nation !! Last fight was THREE HOURS inside the bank where the Forex staff inside the bank could not get hold of their head office to resolve a R3k payment .... The other problem with the "Business SAVINGS" account is that you CANT get monthly statements mailed to you - becomes a pain to regularly go into the bank to have statements printed for the accountant - and VERY expensive.

Drove down to FNB and have never looked back.

Google offers free website hosting, you get a http://www.sites.google.com/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;<your site> address, the builder is super easy to use. If you like, you can use a URL shortner to have a shorter and easier to use address, bit.ly is a good one.
Happy trails

Edzakkery!!!

Refer to my post - there you learn everything you need and a bit more.

Peter Carruthers and Pete Bowen created more than 700 000 enquiries/business leads for business owners in 2/3/4(not sure) years!

She has just started out on her own, Leo & Ness, so any enquiries will be appreciated.
She also did these for my work bakkie.
