Jumper Cables

Post by pietpetoors »

Last time I went to Montagu my mom's old Nissan Bakkie wouldn't start and I tried to use her jumper cables to start it. But for some odd reason enough amps did not reach the flat battery to crank it.

I opened it to see if the cables are making contact with the clamps and with a shock I found that although the isolation is about 8mm thick, the wire inside has a diameter of only 1.7mm.

No wonder it wouldn't work, the 2.5 sqr mm cable we sell in the shop has more copper than these "jumpers".

This is what cheapy spare shop "jumper" cables look on the inside:

Sadly, that is typical of the rubbish sold by many spares outlets. Always pays to look carefully at the copper, this is all-important for good jumper cables.

I saw jumpers at a Spares Shop the other day going for just short of R650.

Years ago I took 2 x 3m of 16mm welding cable, 4 earth clamps, best jumpers ever and I'm sure today it won't cost more than R500.

Only the use of that cables are the clamps. Use welding cables and those clamps.
