The problem is the heat build up, you can't enclose it. I would look at which area the mud gets through and place an shield of some sorts in that area or as Cassie says, stick to tar :laugh2:

Maybe another idea is to install some kind of water spray system to rinse the alternator directly after the mud...

You would have to install a camera in the engine bay

if there is mud there should be water close by, so drive mud then rinse with a water drive

Maybe a mesh type or solid plate shield under the alternator..not going to keep the water away kicked up by the cooling fan though. Alternator's "fan" cools it front to back, I guess an all round shield should be fine as long as you keep the front/back sides open

Just out of interest incase I one day find myself with the same problem.. how do you repair it? Just take it out, clean it and then put back? Or is the issue more serious than that?

To prevent this can the alternator not be moved higher in the engine bay?

Duane the problem is far worse than a cheap alternator fix ....

YES, give the engine bay, chassis, suspension, the whole lot a water wash, and again and again.

BUT, once a vehicle STOOD in the water/mud like that you have "grit" that entered every single moving part !!

Ever wondered why wheel bearings "just pack up" ....

load sensing valves get stuck ... and brake bias gets messed up ...

You get that grit into the bushes and it "seats" into the rubber parts and grind away at the steel ....

grinds away are brakes - if you are lucky. worse is when it messes up the floating pins on the brake calipers .... get ready for seriously accelerated wear on break pads, and if you dont pick it up in time the second set is gone before you realise the actual problem.

the alternator bearings cant last with sand in it, and the bushes may also wear faster.

Please dont get me wrong - YES, dis lekker sports.

Maar maak daai wa SKOON as jy klaar gespeel het !!!!

for the Capies - stay way clear of the acidic water at Melkbos 4x4 !! That acid EATS a car !!!

Thanks Chris.

I checked my workshop manual and bakkie earlier out of interest and see the alternator runs off a belt system like the AC etc. I'll add that one to my list of appy questions asked..

Even shallower than that you'll manage to get the alternator wet....did a water crossing at Groenkloof once and ended up replacing alternator bearing 8 months down the line

Yes, Mud is horrible stuff. I had Relays failing and Central locking packed up lonnnnng after I replaced my Alternator.
My Electric Fan's relay packet up which caused the fuse to go, which caused Swartvark to get HOT and then the radiator hose popped off, which left me high in the mountains on a 4x4 trail with only a 2ltr coke bottle of water to fill the radiator with after using some tinfoil to bridge the fuse and clamping the hose back in place. :frustrated:

This weekend's mus was not too bad though. :cooldude:

hehehehe.....

mud ooo glorious mud .....

driving through it ... probably will add to the wear and tear.

The real problem starts when you STOP in the mud - especially if it is more water than mud. It is the muddy-water that seeps into the moving components ....

maar dit IS mos hoekom ons die goed aanhou - om te SPEEL .... replacing a few bushes and few bearings a few months earlier is a small price to pay. Just beware that this extra maintenance IS required if you intend doing long distances.

Haha jaaa...I also loooved water crossings mud & all...but service your winch and do the rear brakes after the fact and you become semi-allergic to it
Took longer to clean the entire assembly than to replace the brake shoes :laugh2:

Still battling to clean the engine bay 18 months after playing in that same hole Cassie took a bath in...
