IIRC it's a tube (usually stainless steel) with fine perforations that gets driven into the ground where the ground-water table is close to the surface. Water then seeps into the tube and can be pumped out and collected for utilization. (I might be wrong and this might be called something else, but I think it is a wellpoint). :think:

A wellpoint or drive point is a pipe with openings large enough to allow water to enter and small enough to keep the water-bearing formation in place. Well points suitable for hand driving are available in sizes from 1¼ to 2 inches in diameter and from 18 to 60 inches long. The size of openings in the wellpoint is determined by the relative grain size of the material in the water-bearing formation. Some of the finest grains adjacent to the wellpoint should be removed by pumping to make the well more productive. (figure 1)

Boorgat - hulle BOOR in die aarde in, sak n pyp, suig water op.

Wellpoint - vat n pyp, dryp jou hosepipe bo in en draai kraan oop. Nou druk jy stadig daai pyp in die aarde af ... die kraan water spoel die sand uit die pyp uit en die pyp sak gelydelik laer en laer in die grond af .... My buurman het dit laat doen. Vat omtrent n dag vir n paar meter in ons sanderige grond. Ons water tafel is lekker hoog. MAAR baie "yster" in die water !! Bruin vlekke waar jy ookal daai water gebruik.
