What a joke!!
Asked for a quote from Hollard Insurance (pay-as you-drive) for a quote. For my 1998 4x4 2,4 petrol s/cab, they quoted on a value of R40000. .
Searching the SA web I find a 1998 Hilux 4x4 2,8 (d) s/cab at R65000.
They sure as Hell aint going to get any business, some one needs to inform them that Hilux SFA are a special breed of vehicles.
A few years back I had a major fight with my insurers over the same problem and they finally agreed that I could nominate the value of my Hilux which I currently have insured at R60000.
Same goes for 'Out Insurance'; about as year ago I asked them for a quote; they would not even consider insurance of a vehicle less that R100,000

Harold,
There is really only one choice, read here:
Tuff Stuff
Tuiff Stuff went to the assistance of a drowned VW Taureg in Botswana when the driver's own Insurance company wrote off the claim. The driver was not even insured with Tuff Stuff. The Company specialises in 4x4 Insurance and Dirk has put together a nice comparison between a Tuff Stuff Policy and a standard policy.

Re: Vehicle Insurance 'Rip-Off'
They specialise in 4x4 Insurance and after their much-publicised good Samaritan effort, I think many of the CF members have gone over to them. Their rates seem to be very competitive and they do recover a vehicle from within a neighbouring state, and not from the border as many of the other companies do. Although I am not with them (yet), I am keeping my options open.

Re: Vehicle Insurance 'Rip-Off'
When I called TS, Schalk asked me what the value of the vehicle was, and then what the value of the extra's are. They know there stuff.
By the way, they have informed all there clients that they will be covered at the competition on the 15th at AaWDC fun day.
First insurance company to who laughed and accepted the fact that I had drowned a vehicle in a river and then still came in at R90 cheaper than my insurer I had at the time.
Nice bunch to deal with as well.

Re: Vehicle Insurance 'Rip-Off'
Hi Harold.
Keep us posted on what they say.
I will also have to start looking for an alternative.
My van is only covered for R38 000.I can put on all the extra's but it will cost a fortune.

Re: Vehicle Insurance 'Rip-Off'
I just spoke to Schalck and he will cover my van for R83 000 and it will cost me R640 a month.
At the moment I pay R480 for R38 000.

Re: Vehicle Insurance 'Rip-Off'
I am currently insured for
1998 Hilux 2,4 (p) s/cab with steel canopy R68,800 at 494.56 per month (>300,000km)
1997 Hilux 2,4 (p) d/cab with fibreglass, canopy, stainless steel bull bar, long-range tank
R82600 at R494.37 (133000km). For both Hilux's R977.93
I asked Tuff Stuff to quote only on the 1998 s/cab, - R663 pm for a value of R87400 - by comparison Tuff Stuff are only slightly more expensive. The difference in value was that I included a top rack, roof-top tent, and long-range tank. I was impressed with their quote and will now study the fine print between them and my current insurers to weigh-up the pros and cons before I decide.
I sure want to keep my premiums as low as I can.
