Diabetes... a new healthier life style ...

Post by ChrisF »

I did a search and see many on the forum has walked this road.

I went for an opperation on Friday, and the pre-opp checkup showed high blood sugar. I laughed it off as no more than a "spike" .. afterall, I have my blood checked every 6 months.

Doctors did not laugh with ..... another check, followed by a blood test, all still pre-opp. After the opp I got some meds for the high blood sugar. Been doing the Accu-Check since then, fasting reading reading first thing in the morning .... levels hover between 9,7 and 9,2.

Going for another blood test tomorrow, seeing the doc early next week.

As you can well imagine I have been doing a lot of reading .....

As a technical chap I love a good discussion on intercoolers and what charging system for the second battery ....

MAN, these food articles are soemthing else to read .... :naah:

QUESTION - any wall chart that really works ?? Bear in mind this is a new life style for me, but just as much for my wife that has to re-learn recipes after all these years .....

bit of perspective - this may be some shock to the wife and I, but I walked out of Panorama on Saturday morning, 24 hours after Rolbos said his final good bye ....

fair to say I have been having some philosophical thoughts over the last few days ! NOT sorry for myself, just planning ahead to be healthy AND to enjoy the time we have on this little planet.

I've been a type 1 Diabetic for 18 years now.

What I've learn over this time is raw fruits and veg as much as possible, stay away from diary at all cost.

Stay away from any,and I mean any bread, white, brown, seeded or rye. And no cereal.

If raw fruit and veg is not your thing, Banting or Palio is the next best diet.

Good luck!

Yes its quite a change and a lot of will power. I found out in the middle of last year that my blood sugar was high, about 12.I am still trying to read an work out what I can and cannot eat and drink. I have lost about 13 kg since I stopped using sugar and eating all my favorite things. At the moment I keep my level between 7 and 8. I can get it down more but I still drink 1 or 2 drinks on a weekend. I am at the moment taking Metformin 500 mg 3 times a day. There are so many different ideas out there on the internet, one is not sure which is the best or correct way to go. I also found out by mistake, the one day I tested myself with my deceased wife machine and got the suprise.I was feeling a bit down and my feet were a bit sore.I am also on Warfarin for blood clots in my legs, for about 8 years now. With this I tend to get pains in my feet. Now I have the extra burden of the sugar which affect a persons feet first. But we try and will see how it goes.

Hi Roger. Thanks for the feedback

YES, becomes daunting to read up on this.

You dont have to read far to find conflicting points of view .....

This is certainly one of the easier sites to read : http://www.helpguide.org/articles/diet- ... d-tips.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I especially like the tables they provide with do's and dont's .... Would LOVE a wall chart that combines this information into a single source. I have no desire to work through thick books to search for a few lines of useful information ....

Some people have had amazing results by going LCHF or Banting; worth reading up on that if you have not already done so. Good luck!!

Ronnie I am following the banting story .....

certainly a lot of good in it.

but also already a recorded increase in cholesterol due to the indiscriminate fat usage ....

Tim is certainly taking on the establishment ....

but so much smoke that the ordinary person have no chance at knowing the truth of it all.

BUT, if you compare the basis of a diabetic food programe with banting there are LOTS of similarities !!

Read more about cholesterol and how it is not at all a good indicator for heart disease....not a medical professional and don't want to get into too much on a forum not at all related. Have however been going LCHF for 2.5 years now so have done my homework. Feel free to PM me and I will happily share what I have figured out from the last few years of digging. Also do google searches for Volek as well as Gary Taubes....lots of very useful info there

EARLY MORNING, FASTING OR NOT ARE THE WORST READINGS IN ANY DAY FOR ME AND HAVE BEEN FOR 18 YEARS.NEVERTHELESS IT IS NOT A GOOD SCORE .YOUR CHALLENGE IS TO LOWER IT DURING THE REST OF THE DAY WITH EXERCISE, NO CARBS AND LOTS OF FRESH REAL FOOD . BE CAREFUL WTH NOT TOO MUCH FRUIT AS THE SUCROSE WILL SPIKE YOUR READINGS ALSO . A GREEN GRANNY SMTH APPLE WITH THE SKIN ON IS YOUR BEST BET .TIM NOAKES HAS WONDERFUL BREAKFASTS LUNCHES AND SUPPERS IN HIS BANTING RECIPE BOOK WHICH IS A MUST READ FOR YOURSELF . MY GP, CAN YOU BELIEVE IT, IS A TRUE TIM NOAKES CONVERT AND SUPPORTS ALL THAT IAM DOING .

had an "interesting" morning .....

- specialist - jip its diabetes
- diatitian - ... umh ja ... none of the food we have at home, and a list of stuff I have never heard of before .... okay, not that bad, but you get the picture ....
- diabetic clinic - got the glucose meter and lots more information ....

"slight" information overload at the moment.

reading the info, but not sure what to do for lunch - I am on the road most days .... seams I have to work my head around packing in food, with some cold blocks.

PS - specialist is pro low carb LOW fat diet. Actually said: "Banting without the excessive fat".

For now I will go with what the dietician gave me (which is also pretty much low carb low fat).

YES, I certainly will climb this mountain !

Fair to say my head is still spinning, and it will take some time for the reality sets in. But I keep on reminding myself of Rolbos - who passed away the day after I was discharged from Panorama. I think of another friend who has been battling cancer for the last 4 or 5 years, been cut up so many times it aint funny.

So having to change my diet and take two tables a day certainly aint no biggy ....

Thanks to those who are walking this road and have shared their school-fees. It is truly appreciated !!

And thanks to the other members for putting up with this non-Toy discussion.

Swambo packs lunch box every day... it contains fruit, yoghurt, popcorn, sarmie and water...
eating healthy can be quite nice.

chicken strips and veggies can be great with the correct spices.

interesting to watch this Noakes show from a distance ....

Medical doctors with double specialities, and research practices that quote medical stats to show increased cholesterol amongst banting persons .... easy enough to say these people are part of the establishment that Noakes want to expose ....

have to wonder when one of Noakes's very own students, who is now holds an international accredited sports sciences doctorate advocates LCLF - also quoting increased cholesterol as the reason.

for better or worse, Noakes has gotten a few people to have another look at their daily intake.

first two weeks done

dropped nearly 3 kg !

correct diet and the mild meds dont have it under control as yet. Now on the next level of meds.

Eyes have been messing about badly .... but cant do anything until the sugar levels out. Which wont happen until the meds are sorted.

Know a few people that have been living with this for years. You learn to live with it. But this "tuning period" is a real pain !!

Took Swambo for a check-up yesterday. Now she really has a sweet tooth - takes FIVE teaspoons of sugar in her tea / coffee!! She's forever got sweets with her, even carries a little container around in her bag, so I asked them to do a blood sugar test at the same time. Mine I know tends to be on the high side but I try to watch what I eat, so checked it at the same time.

Hers clocks in at 6.4 and mine at 9.9 :eh: It just ain't fair!

Going for a glucose tolerance check in the morning after fasting for 12 hrs plus. Will see what that brings up - might just be joining you on the diet, Chris. :(

Andy thought you were talking of MY wife there for a second ...

LOVES her Coca Cola.

THICK slices of butter

the list carries on ....

and she is the healthy one.

Yesterday's session at the dietition was a watershed moment. The doctor has been PUSHING me on the diet - wanting to keep the meds "low". But it got to a point of absurdity .... Let's just say for meds I will listen to the doctors - looking at moving over to a diabetic specialist. For food I will listen to a person with a masters degree at Potch in food.

Andy for one second let's look at the next few weeks IF your blood sugar comes back bad :

- You will get a referal to a dietitian. First session about an hour ... information overload ... be ready to answer a million questions about your current life style and food choices
- The doctor will also give you a referal to a "diabetic nurse" .... here you get a R 750 blood tester for free, with only a few test strips. Again a long talk .... I had my three sessions in a row, after nearly four hours it was total information overload !! If you can, at least have an hour or two gap between these sessions.
- and now you are strapped in and the roller coaster can start .... they have to start with a best guess and give you some meds .... only way to see if it works is regular testing (in my case three times a day). After two weeks the first adjustment was made to my meds, now another two weeks of testing, and then the call will be made on the next course of meds IF the current does not work. It could take 6 weeks or more to get to some stability ! Eat right, and DONT stress about the sugar levels, just pass it on to the doctors .... now if only I could give head to this advise !! Absolute emotional rollercoaster.

These guys provide the test kits - https://www.accu-chek.co.za/za/#" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

some excellent reading - http://www.kitchencorner.co.za/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

these sites are purely scientific, none of the emotional and biased stuff you are bound to get on blogs .....

Hi Chris,

Sterkte jong.

No official result back yet but went for the test. Reading at 08h30 today after a 12 hr fast was 5.4

I was then given a glass of water with about 3 tablespoons of glucose!!

After 2 hrs I had to go back for another reading to see how my system had 'metabolised' it (while still fasting). That reading at 10h30 was 5.0

I have to go back tomorrow afternoon to hear the official feedback, but as I see it, my system has been more than able to effectively handle the glucose. (Hope the doc sees it the same way! :D:)

Thinking back, yesterday's reading was taken shortly after lunch, which just happened to be sarmies (4 slices of bread) and that bread (carbohydrate) would have been converted to sugar - if that is indeed the case, I'd be surprised that it could have happened so quickly.

Holding thumbs for good news tomorrow. :winkx:

:winkx:

I'm also holding thubs for you.

Oooo........I believe it takes about 10 min for bread to break down to sugar in your bloodstream.

the sugar spike would also greatly depend on the type of bread.

White or "standard brown" bread spikes a lot.

Whole weat and Rye breads are Low GI and spikes significantly less, and the sugar release is maintained much longer.

The lower spike is as important as the longer release period. It is not only the sugar high that causes issues, but also the sugar low.

Fair to say it has been a "bit" of an emotional roller coaster ride the last 6 weeks.

Got the call on Friday from the doc. Sugar is only slightly high with the current set of meds. Keep up the eating plan, and keep the meds as is for the next month.

We trust this is the turning point and stronger meds wont be needed.

Getting used to the eating plan. actually enjoying it. Made some "lekka" sosasies for the braai today.

Been an interesting 3 months.

First set of meds did not do the trick. Had to up the morning meds. Two months down the road we now know these meds are strong enough ... just possibly may go down a notch.

Lifestyle ... man this is a totally mind shift !! And definately not in a bad way.

Sommer so paar gedagte -

- Google is gevaarlik !!
- Voorraad …. Jy gaan nou by twee of drie winkels stop om kos te koop.
- Medikasie … diabetes is n veranderende toestand !!

Een verbasing is hoeveel minder skottelgoed daar is !

In kort, regtig n positiewe verandering. Maar, dit vat n “mind set” verandering.

Chris, thank you for sharing in such detail your day to day struggles with us! Must say I'm really glad to read that you are taking it seriously, and putting in the effort to change your lifestyle. My FIL has diabetes too so I've seen first hand how difficult it is to make the right nutritional choices, especially at family gathering... birthdays, braais, Christmas, etc! Keep going!

Chris, do a little research on Taurine supplementation.

While doing my own research on fructose malabsorption(a hereditary condition I have) I've read that it's very beneficially for Type 1 & 2 diabetics. Your own body produces Taurine in the kidneys, but with the onset of diabetes the volumes decrease and can be supplemented orally. Taurine is found throughout your body, and it used in various bodily chemical functions(heart, brain, eyes,). Most importantly it has a protective and re-generative function for nerves/nervous system, which is often adversely affected by diabetes. There's a lot of medical literature online, read here:

Exert from the link below:

Notably, the beneficial roles of taurine in the context of diabetes have been widely studied in recent years (Ito et al., 2012). Accumulating data demonstrate the effectiveness of taurine supplementation against type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes mellitus, and metabolic syndrome. Above all, taurine supplementation reduces diabetic complications, including retinopathy, nephropathy, neuropathy, atherosclerosis, and cardiomyopathy. However, these effects of taurine on diabetes have usually been studied in animal models with streptozotocin-induced diabetes, which mimics type 1 diabetes.

Speak to your doc & nutitionist, it may well be of benefit to you, and it's not expensive at all!

Thanks Bretton

I'd say the biggest "struggle" is to re-learn your shopping habits ...

DO NOT concentrate on what you cant have.

WORK on finding what you CAN have. WOW, wide range of stuff available. Some very nice stuff as well.

I spent many hours re-working my dieticians advise into a range of crip-notes. Now have these on the phone and at the ready at any time if I am not sure of which option/product to take ...

BUT, please note that for each and every individual this list WILL vary !! The process starts with your doctor, and a series of blood tests. Your weight, your type and "intensity" of biabetes, your genetic pre-disposition, etc etc .... A DECENT dietician wont start your consultation without having access to these blood record.

I have a "pre-disposition ...", a friend has "early onset ..." - TOTALLY different final menus, from the same initial list of items !!

Yes, you miss one or two items - for me it is bacon with my Saturday breakfast - but the benefits of good health far outway this.

Well done Martin !!

I am now 11kg down since December, and 17kg since the max a few years back.

Few centimeters still to go, probably another 4 or 5 kg ....

the nice thing is that as time pass you no longer think about what you cant have, but look forward to trying out new stuff. 2 weeks back I made my own burger patties. Last Saturday had my second go at it - about 50% lean mince and 50% finely chopped mushrooms. NICE !!

YES, will also be holding thumbs and wishing you an all-clear.

Hoping more people will at least go for an annual medical check-up. Early diagnoses is KEY.

IF, the results are not an all-clear - I CAN confirm, their IS life after this diagnoses !! Early diagnoses, and the correct diet and you have a very good chance of a normal life.

Few thoughts for those that do go the diabetic route:
- get a decent doctor that understand diabetes
- you will get a session with a "diabetic nurse", here you will get your test kit for free (they make their money from the test strips)
- next step is to see a dietician. VERY happy Berna at Panaorama Dieticians !! This lady KNOWS her stuff !! http://www.panoramadietitian.co.za/about_1.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; PLEASE stay away from google for your food !!!!!! It just confuses the daylights out of you !! Berna will look at your blood test results, and the doctors referal letter, with a proper medical understanding of YOUR root-cause she then tailers your lifestyle choices.
- BE PATIENT ! Every adult gets diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, with so many sub-causes ... getting the meds sorted can take a few months !! Three months down the line, and I am waiting for feedback from the doc about another potential change in the prescription, this time to lower the one dosage as my bloodsuger is now going too low after breakfast ... as you eat right your body DO improve and you may well need less meds ...
- get ready to shop around ... not one single shop has the range of diabetic food stuffs !! this is the only item that still irks me ... Often go to a particular store, just to find they are out of stock, then to the next, and the next. Can at least confirm our nearest P&P Hypermarket seems to carry the largest stock. Checkers at Willowbridge also has a very good range.
- it really helps if you can work out a healthy, but edible, menu. One that the whole family can join in.
- exercise ... the benefits of a decent exercise is MORE and longer lasting than any other treatment !!

PS - most medical aids DO cover the sessions at a dietitian. And even if your medical aid does not, at just over R300 for a half our session this must be some of thee cheapest medical sessions out there today.

Chris, that 50/50 mushroom and mince burger patties sounds delicious. I must try it out.

I also need to start eating healthier again, I did banting for a while but stopped about 3 months ago, and since then I have been eating all the unhealthy stuff like there is no tomorrow.

Banting is actually a decent STARTING point for a healthy life style.

For those with Diabetes it gets slightly more complex in that diabetics are at a increased risk for hart problems. Thus high fat content is not a good thing. Thus Banting MINUS the high fat is pretty much what a diabetic diet looks like. Except that for each type of diabetes the diet will be tweaked ....

A hamburger certainly is a nice relaxing evening with friends and family. The mass produced stuff is just full of not so good products. Go to a place like Joeys and get quality lean mince, egg, spices, and use half a Wheetbix instead of bread, and some chopped onion, Worcester sauce, Lite Chutney. With this as the starting point you can pretty much add any healthy extra you like .... We had some mushrooms, so I added it into the mix and it turned out EXCELLENT :)

worcester sauce

spices ...

to spice it up a bit :
- half a green pepper finely chopped
- half a yellow pepper finely chopped
- 150 grams of finely chopped mushrooms

I got my results back from my bloodtests and the diagnosis is that I have:

"Pre Diabetes"

I'm not quite sure what that means but I think I should be adjusting my diet nê.

Yes you should. What it means is that you're not producing enough insulin on demand ... kinda like a sluggish 4Y trying to maintain 120km/h up a steep hill, but once you overcome it all's well again until the next hill. So if you reduce the amount of sugar and carbohydrate intake its like your 4Y is resident in the Karoo flatlands, no big hills to climb and your 4Y lives happily in that zone. :D:

It's a moderate adjustment, but the spin-off benefits in the long term are enormous, possibly even avoiding insulin supplementation down the line altogether.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Richard see it as a nice RED FLAG.

You are one of the lucky ones to get a proper warning, before the "final verdict".

Yes, surely you are in for a diet change. More to the point, you are in for a life style change. - Eat better, and moderate exercise.

Depending on your blood tests - the pre-diabetic diagnoses, AND some other indicators - your dietician can then help you with an eating plan that will suit you and your family.

SOME pre-diabetics get to take pills - again depending on the full set of blood work ....

The nice thing with being PRE-diabetic is that you get some "give" on your eating plan.

Not sure where in the Cape you are, but I can really recommend Berna at Panorama Dieticians - http://www.panoramadietitian.co.za/about_1.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Been an interesting 5 months ...

19 February my blood sugar was high before a minor operation.

1 week later I had a follow up blood test .... and the roller coaster started.

2 March I saw my doctor and officially got the news that I have Type 2 diabetes. 30 minutes later I had a 1 hour session with a dietitian .... talk about information overload !! Hardly time to catch my breath and I had a session with the "diabetics nurse" and got my blood glucose meter. Off to the pharmacy to get my first script of diabetic meds.

About 2 or 3 weeks later it was confirmed these meds were just not strong enough .... might as well admit this was NOT good news ! Got some strong meds for the morning and stayed on the lighter meds for the evenings.

28 April I had a bit of a shocker .... checked my sugar level 90 minutes after breakfast, should have done it 120 minutes after breakfast, but was on the way out. Level was on the upper limit, 42 minutes later my blood sugar CRASHED !! From 7 down to 2,4 in 42 minutes !! Take my word for it, you DONT want your sugar levels that low !! Over the next 2 months I had a steady increase in incidents where my blood sugar would drop low after breakfast ... different types of breakfast, from Pronutro to Oats to Omlett.

On 15 June the doctor told me to go back to the lighter meds in the morning and evening. Imagine my emotions when my blood sugar was very high on the 16th and 17th .... I was told to hang in there, and give my body a few days to adapt. For the last week my sugar levels are between 4,8 and 5,2. That is SPOT ON !!!  :cooldude:

All the research confirms that your body takes less strain and your diabetes is "better" if you loose about 5% of your weight. So TRUE !!

I never intended to go on a "diet", at least not as a weight loss exercise. Yes, we made a very definite life style change. We literally gave away about 5 bags of processed foods. Only fresh food, from the classic diabetic foods list. The changes was aimed at reducing my carb intake, and upping my vegitable intake. Only very moderate exercise at this stage (actually too little at the moment). In October 2011 I peaked at 108kg. For 4 years I hovered around 102 to 104 kg. I now weigh in at under 90kg ! Okay, probably 89,8kg, but thats still UNDER 90kg. :yahoo: :lmao:

Last year my XXL jackets fitted "snugly" ... as in the zip needed some help to close .... Now a "L" jacket fits loose.

MAN, it feels NICE not to see a pregnant fairy in the mirror !!!

For the first time in many many years I can actually put a plate on my "skoot" when sitting around a fire with friends.

jammer dat man nou so skop onder die gat nodig het om reg te eet ... :siffler: :siffler:

I CAN confirm that this diagnoses certainly IS the start of a roller coaster !! That first month each and every blood sugar reading messes with your emotions !! But you do get past that. Then it is up to you. YOU decide if life is one long complaint about what you cant have, OR you research the very long list of stuff you CAN have and make the best of it. Actually IS possible to enjoy life despite this diagnoses !!
