Visit a children's hospital ward, you'll come out feeling a lot better about your own situation. ;-)

I have been on some new meds for arthritus for a 2 or 3 years. Then got invited to speak at a mini conference on the topic, and how the meds have changed my life .....

At the time I was a public speaker and used to audiences of over a 100. Knew the tricks to get the groups attention and how to get the message accross .... man I was READY for this conference !

Then an 18 year old lady had her turn to speak before me - from her wheel chair !

She has the exact same diagnoses as I do - but got diagnosed too late and the damage was done. She needs a joint replacement of virtually every hip/knee/elbow/etc .... 18 years old and no expectancy of a "real life" .....

Needless to say I barely mumbled my way through my speech ..... early diagnose and a good prognosis suddenly just did not feel the same ......

Ja, I know this all too well myself.

Last week I was diagnosed with the beginning stages of cataracts(34 years old) and have to wear spectacles permanently now.
Just another blow to my self esteem and confidence knocked out the park.

I've been working quite nicely on my "disability" and have overcome a lot.

It just seems that some people are tested more than others in life.

Well, we have to go see Calvin's school on Monday because he choked his teacher...
We made a concious decision to not let his disability get us, and subsequently HIM, down.

Here's the good news in relation to this club/forum - he's crazy about Loretta, wants to sit behind the wheel almost every waking minute - in the mornings before 6 I'm outside, unlocking the door for him where he sits for long periods going "vroooooom!" and "Lore....TA!"

His favourite passtime all because I wanted to ask a dumb question about a fridge on camping a few years ago...

Going out with Loretta on Saturday again, purely to keep Calvin happy, to a fundraiser 4x4 thingy in Elsburg. To "die berge met Lore...TA!".

He drives us nuts. He's aggressive and dangerous to leave unsupervised around his 2year old sister (he's 8), although she already gives as good as she gets. And then he gets behind that bakkie's wheel and he's the happiest kid in the world.

And once in a while I go do some odd-jobs at a respite centre he goes to during school holidays, semi-charity semi-trade for discounted rates. And when you get there and see how badly disabled some of those kids are, you realise how well off we really are with our little nut job!

We have our woes as well, like I'm sure that everyone else has too. Swanbo lives with a sword above her head every day, but the funny thing is that you become accustomed to it being there and you live your life around it. We adapt. Should that sword fall ..... well I don't even want to go there .....

Interestingly, I believe that if you take any number of people with serious issues, let each one writer down a description on a piece of paper, give everyone there the time to read each tale of woe and then let them choose which they would rather have - I'm convinced that each will choose his / her own. "Better the devil you know" perhaps.

Kobus, my apologies for taking what I think you intended as a humorous topic, and turning it into a philosophical one. :D:

P.S. If any of you find yourself in a situation where you can no longer laugh at yourselves, call me ......... I'll laugh at you!

All of a sudden I am really humbled by all the wonderful things in my life - and knowing that there's a very good purpose for those things I experience as less wonderful?!

Mate of mine was diagnosed 4 weeks ago with stage 4 cancer, colon, liver, lymph etc. Turns 50 in July. Oncologist says usual chemo will be waste of time, so now they're trying a new chemo. Problem: medical aid does not cover it, so now he has to cough up R 30 000 cash every 2nd week, so we're fundraising...

Things like this just suddenly shifts the focus away from the self...
