suggested route from franschhoek to montagu

Post by african dust »

Hi all, I am travelling from Franschoek to Montagu and have a day or two to spare. Does anybody know of any interesting routes in that area that would make the journey all the better for a Hilux and its family ? Less tar, more dirt=more fun. Thanks for some pointers to all who know the area. A good overnight spot would be perfect too.

Looking at T4A map there seem to be a few nice 'small' trails and camp sites   :

I will have to look at the map.A couple of years back i did the same trip and i drove from Franschoek to Bonniedale via Eilandia IIRC. Very nice route and even a few 4x4 tracks.(Groot Toren 4wd-trail)

There are huge mountains in that area, with no roads over it, so in some cases you'll have to get on the black-top, but my suggestion would be to drive to:

Villiersdorp via the Franschhoek pass. Tar road but very scenic.
From Villiersdorp drive towards Hexriver, and join the N1 just before De Doorns
After De Doorns, on the N1 towards Touws River, turn off to Leeuwenboschfontein
Leeuwenboschfontein - Overnight here. they have a fantastic camp site, and one of the best 4x4 trails in the Western Cape.
From Leeuwenboschfontein keep going east and then drive to Montagu over the Ouberg pass.

Have a look on Google Maps, the route can be plotted there. Hope this helps.

Most of all ENJOY.............
