Meat in Botswana?

Post by Baja »

We are going to Moremi in July and I have tried to contact numerous Botswana departments to find out what the latest is in taking meat North. Previously when in Botswana it was OK to take meat north but not south, but lately I have been hearing plenty stories about meat being taken at borders, vet fences, etc regardless of direction of travel. Does anyone know what the latest rules are?

Thanks for the info. At least now I can plan accordingly. Can anyone recommend a butcher and veggie shop in Maun?

You will be passing through Francistown surely, there is a Spar in the main road, you can get fairly decent meat there and then again up north in Kasane

I have sent an email to the Director of Veterinary service Dr something.....will hear what the latest is....

In Maun the best place we could find was here:

How do the authorities control the meat that is transported around in the various countries, that place a ban on bringing meat & vegetables into their countries? Would you have to drive around with proof of where the meat & veg was purchased or are the controls just done at the Border posts?
I know about the foot & mouth road blocks, but that just means that meat may go North, but not South. :banned:
:beg: Can anyone supply any additional information? :problem: or must you just hide it ? :silent:

Even if you have proof / slip that you have purchased the meat in the passing through town, they will take the meat...happened to us in Nam driving East to West.....

Controls are done at border posts as well as vet check points. We do not make things obvious....obviously :wink2:

Yes
Just because it says "4WD" doesn't make it an off-road vehicle.

We recenty did a trip to Caprivi. We went through Martin's Drift and although we never took meat, there were 3 SA vehicles with piles of meat. The poor guys were trying to cook it in the parking lot at the border Anyway because we never had meat or fruit etc we never had a problem. When we got to Katima we went to Pick 'n Pay and bought the most amazing well matured vaccum packed rump at the most decent price.

Don't know why I would bring expensive meat from Joburg when I can buy cheap meat in Nam.
Just because it says "4WD" doesn't make it an off-road vehicle.

I agree, bought the best biltong ever in Maun. Yip, only Zim may be a tricky one, not that great looking and pricey... just found fresh veggies and fruit in Bots could be limited in some places..
