overlanding spares
not sure if this should be under a more technical thread ?
what physical spares do you guys take with on an overlanding trip ?
basically a list of stuff for the vehicle, (not proviant or tools)
for instance:
do you go as far as taking a waterpump ?
complete alternator
fanbelt set
inner tubes (just incase a tyre is too damaged for a plug etc)
all needed fluids
light bulps, fuses, electrical wire
tyre repair kit
greytape, ziplocks
selection of bolts&nuts

Re: overlanding spares
NO.
the list gets toooooo long, and it is just not possible to cater for all possible issues.
I do have an ammo box full of tools, tapes, cable ties, etc etc ...
but I am not planning to take any spares along.

Re: overlanding spares
Only take basics,as you have mentioned.Rather look at your insurance and what they offer recovery wise outside the country.

Re: overlanding spares
You don't have to take the whole alternator for instance but maybe just a regulator

Re: overlanding spares
I take the following spares:
Diesel filter, drive belts, variety of fuses and bulbs, silicone tape, tyre valves and seeing that all my slides are home made from aluminium, a 12v drill and a variety of pop rivets. I would like to add a front and rear shock to my kit. Anything more than that I wont be able to fix in the bush anyway.

Re: overlanding spares
Most important is a tow bar and wheel bearings for a stress free trip. Without bearings you go no where. The tow bar makes the towing out of rough terrain much easier and over long distances.

Re: overlanding spares
so wanneer doen mens n "once-over" - vervang al die rubber pype, bearings, belde, ens ....

The basics ... tyre repair goodies, fan belt set, spare fuses, ... that type of stuff.
When your road comes to an end ...... you need a HILUX!.

Re: overlanding spares
As it was said below, you cannot cater for everything. Take you vehicle to a good mechanic (Hoppy) for a thorough look-see to determine the condition of all the rubber hoses and belts etc etc. That should give you some peace of mind.
I pack some fluids and dont forget the brake fluid. As far as spares goes, I have fuses, tyre stuff, nuts and bolts, maybe a spare radiator hose, some hose clamps, and the old fanbelts that were replaced at the last service and that is about it. I dont know how to change a water pump, and chances are the car will be even more broken after I changed it than before.
For the rest I take out a good insurance policy that will repatriate my vehicle, and enough food and water and a sat phone to get help and wait for help to arrive.
