Fuel cards in Namibia

Post by Toppie4x4 »

Apparently no more credit, debit or garage cards accepted in Namibia, only local fleet cards. Take note all who wants to travel to Namibia.

So I guess paying in cash would be the best way then. Wonder how their fuel prices compare to SA's

Yes would be nice to know the prices. I believe it was advertised in their local papers for the last six months!!!! You will now have to build in a save in your van for fuel money.

Jip, CASH for fuel ...

and DO remember that most "remote towns" rely on cell networks for their ATM's - so DO plan for the regular situation where a town does not have operational ATM's for a few DAYS at a time !!

AND when they do work - R 2 000 limit per card per day !!

DO plan ahead ! :)

Fuel cost - about R1/liter cheaper than SA. so makes little difference in the overall planning, might as well work on our price and have a little extra in the budget.

As a Namibian and an avid Petrol Card user, it really upset me when it was first announced last year. Nothing we could do, the decision had been taken to phase out petro cards. Still don't see the point, other than they have some big money making plan ready to throw at us.

Have a look at this link; not sure how often it is updated, but I hope at least with every petrol price change: http://businessdirectory.na/namibia-fuel-prices/

Article in Die Republikein. http://www.republikein.com.na/plaaslike ... rte.219799" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Johannes Kandombo, ‘n petroljoggie. FOTO IAN NORTJE
From the highlighted area it seems like credit and debit cards can still be used. In BW you can only use cash or credit card.

It is the prerogative of the garage owner to take your card. I think it will be very short-sighted of any garage owner not to take credit cards...

Thys couple of Namibians have "tested" the garages - NO debit cards are being accepted AT THIS TIME ... let's see if sanity prevails, in the mean time DO have cash with you for these large sum purchases ....

Agreed Chris, I am not saying "throw caution to the wind." You need to plan your fuel stops and usage as well as you can anyway, and make sure you have a stash of cash somewhere in your vehicle so that you can fill your tank up at least twice... Anyway thats the way I do it...  This is Africa guys... and cash is still king..

What I also do is to first ask if they take cards be it credit, debit or garage cards and only then do I continue with the transaction. In the bigger centers it should not be a problem because there are ATM's and banks. In the outlaying areas you are lucky to find a card machine that works anyway. But I still ask, so as to preserve my cash-stash for a "rainy day"...

I haven't yet find a service station that will not accept my debit card, but apparently there are service station do not. So just go to next one if they would not accept it. But keep cash in case you can't find one, especially is places where there are only one service station or no ATM's.
