Tyre pressure for Namibia & Kaokoland
Off to Namibia in a few weeks with a Bushlapa Miskruier in tow.
Will be travelling extensively (as one does in Namibia ) on gravel roads & also through Kaokoland.
What tyre pressure would you recommend 1) on the normal Namibia gravel roads and 2) on the Kaokoland roads?
Dueller ATs on the Hilux & Wranglers on the Bushlapa...
Thanks

Re: Tyre pressure for Namibia & Kaokoland
On normal gravel roads I normally do 1.8. Now that I have a TPMS I see that 1.8 easily becomes 2.1 when hot.

With a heavy load and trailer you can go to 2.5 at the back.See how it goes and adjust as you go along.
There will be a big difference if you check it early morning and midday after some driving. For example in the morning it could be 2 bar and after some driving around mid day it could be 2.5 if it is hot and you are towing something

Re: Tyre pressure for Namibia & Kaokoland
4: Sanderige dele het jy klaar n papperige tyre so gooi net pedaal plat...

Re: Tyre pressure for Namibia & Kaokoland
Thanks to all for the replies & advice.
I read once or twice before that lower pressure on dirt roads is better in the long run. But want a bit more direct advice on actual experience...
Recently went with the "higher pressure" (2.6) to the Cederberg & had 1st flat in many years from something cutting through the tyre (in the middle between the treads).
Thinking to go with 1.8 (with TPMS installed)...

Re: Tyre pressure for Namibia & Kaokoland
As said on gravel roads round 1.8 bar, but also depends the size of a tyre. Some say about 20% lower than on tar. Weight on the vehicle also plays a role, then the 20% rule is maybe a better guide line then. A softer tyre have better grip on gravel (larger contact area), and its more comfortable over the corrugations. A high tyre pressure over corrugations can let you loose control over the vehicle.
Off topic, one of the fortuner's issue was the tyre pressure it came from the showroom. They never deflated the tyres when off loading form the transporters. On the transporters they inflate it to a very high pressure else the straps come loose.

(en ek het gesleep).TolBos wrote:I have Bridgestone Dueler ATs (31x10.50 R15)warthog wrote:Anton, what tyres have you got?
