Cat removal?

Post by Mornes »

can anyone give advice as to where my friend can take his v6 Fortuner for a decat? many people are interrested in doing it, but in our area no one seems to have done it before on a v6. we are in the Roodepoort/Randburg area.

catalytic converter = the most restrictive part of most exhaust systems = power loss = drop in fuel consumption

if SA can build coal fired power stations, then we dont needs cats either!! :tease:

The removal of a catalytic converter ALWAYS improves performance!!! We have done
VW's
Merc's
Jeep
Ford
Audi
...........

There are a few ways

1. THE HACK
This involves the cutting of a small "window" in the cat, whether in place or removed, and hacking out the material with a hammer and long screwdriver. Then welding up the window.
Pro's: Cheap de-cat procedure, more power, cheaper than a cat replacement
Con's: Raspy exhaust note more resonance in the vehicle, extra heat through the cat shell can cause the floor to get warmer in that area

2. THE PIPE
This involves cutting out the cat completely and just fitting a straight pipe in its place. This is not always possible as on some vehicles the cat is part of the manifold. Typically non-turbo applications.
Pro's: Cheap de-cat procedure, more power, cheaper than a cat replacement
Con's: Raspy exhaust note more resonance in the vehicle

3. THE RESONATOR/SILENCER
This involves removing the cat and replacing it with a resonator type silencer that kills the exhausy resonance and absorbs a lot of heat. These usually start at about R1000 for supply and fitting at your local exhaust fitment centre.
Pro's: More power, quiet exhaust, no hot floor, cheaper than a cat repalcement
Con's: NONE

PLEASE NOTE: On all of the above; if your vehicle has an oxygen sensor before and after (pre and post) the catalytic converter you WILL need to have the vehicle re-chipped or a dummey O2 sensor (post) fitted as the engine management light will come on to show an emmisions fault. We have performed all of the above, the first two due to budget constraints on the clients part and are usually done as the cat is blocked.

We do not have emmisions monitoring as part of out roadworthy process so it will not affect anything in that regard. But if your vehicle is under warranty it WILL void your warranty. But it is the easiest horsepower gained on a modern vehicle.

There is talk of an annual roadworthy like they do in the UK which will include emmisions testing, but I don't see this happening for a long time to come. We still have to many old vehicles here that never had cats. The taxi industry drives this at the moment. The only requirements at this moment is that the exhaust must not leak, must be secure and not be noisy. So de-cat away. I would say that the legislation is at 3 years away from implementation and I would suspect it would only apply to vehicles from that date.

To de-cat wont effect roadworthy. Its a case of if its fitted as an extra and not a standard SABS requirement, it must work. Cats are not gazzeted as a requirement. As for roadworhty every year, it has been in the pipeline since late 2004. Our infrastructure in sa wont handle it and with all the old cars etc. will take many many years to impliment. Lots of ducks for the gov. to get in a row in this regard before they can do anything anyway.

Dit vat net `n tydtjie, so be warned...

Ek sal oor so `n maand terugvoer gee oor die petrol verbruik

Just some information on the "mini-cats" I keep referring to:

They are installed where your O2 sensor goes. Then your O2 sensor, in turn, screws into the mini-cat.

The internal structure of the mini-cat actually contains the same inner as a catalytic converter in order to supply you O2 sensor with more or less the same exhaust gases it received before the catalytic converter inner was removed.

Apparently mini-cats are not necessary for 4l hiluxes before 2012, but I had them installed just to have piece of mind. I dont want to have engine lights and warnings coming on when I dont need them, especially on a trip.

Have a look at the pictures below that shows what they look like

Hy trek reeds soos 'n 6 silinder of beter as sommige 6 silinders.....

Ek dink ek is in vir ten minste een boks want daar begin nou 'n resonasie voorkom as ek ry en as ek moet wil ek die CAT verwyder dieselfde tyd..

Did mine @ noise boys in Germiston,

4 cats were removed & mini cats were fitted on the sensors in front of the 2 cats @ the back

Then 2 small "cowley" silencers were fitted to minimize the rattle inside the cabin,

Steel pipe from manufault to the big silencer @ the back was fitted

All for R5 k

Got a quote from Supa quick Menlyn for R1600. Cat removal and the fitting of mini cat dummy sensors on my 4.0l Hilux. Not bad at all.
The direct use of force is such a poor solution to any problem, it is generally employed only by small children and large nations.

Mods: EFS suspension - ARB front bumper replacement - Warn winch - Rear sparewheel carrier bumper - 160l long range fuel tank - Toatal unberbelly plate protection - Canvas seat coners - Alu steel Canopy - Snorkel - Kenwood TK VHF Radio - Ctek 250s Dual batery system with solar pannel
