Suspention upgrade??????

Post by Pote »

Morning all.

I have a view questions that I hope to get some feedback on.

I spoke to a guy that sells suspension kits.
The kit he suggested to me for my Fortuner is a shock upgrade and spacers to be installed with the coils. (Complete kit goes for R6500. To be installed). Front and rear, to get the lift that I am looking for. He suggested the spacers as with fitting up rated coils you lose some of your ride comfort. This is totally understandable...

The question I have is has anyone done a suspension upgrade like this??
The concern I have is that with keeping the standard coils and putting in the spacers it might put more strain on the coils and be more prone to failure.

Is this the case or am I worried for nothing..

Any feedback and or comments would be appreciated...

Die spacers sal my 'n 50mm lift gee.

Persoonlik sal ek nooit weer 'n spacer lift doen nie.

My voertuig gelaai of ongelaai ry lekker en hoe vinniger jy nou oor spoedwalle ry hoe lekkerder.

My 2CW...

Suspension is all about your application - one cannot "box" suspension to one type or rather a single solution that will work for everybody, saying this one need to understand there is many factors to take into account when you decide on a specific suspension for you vehicle.
The first question you need to answer is lift or no lift - if you pick no lift then its much easier, but again not out of the fire yet, for there is still so many products on the market to pick from, which one will be the best for your vehicle?

If you pick lift - the next question is first how high you want to go or how high you need to go...??? This all depends again on your application, if it is serious cross country application, touring, 4x4 challenges or just to look better that Mr Jones next door - personally the std Fortuner is almost high enough for any general usage, but again a Fortuner with a lift looks so good!!

Then if you lift, again the question pops up, which brand.... and is there any options available regarding coil spring rating, or rather fit harder springs for load carry applications, but saying this one needs to take into account if you fit harder springs how often are you really going to use the harder springs vs vehicle not loaded every day? For example I use my Fortuner maybe 95% of the time without serious cross country loads, thus it does not really make sense for me to fit hard coils in my vehicle if I will only benefit 5% of the year with the lift?

But how do I lift a vehicle, keep the standard soft coils and add firmness to the vehicle - I have gone for a rear spacer lift kit on my std rear spacers and added a very firm shock to improve the Fortuner's handling - Also the std spring have great flex, thus added a 2" longer shock really increased my rear axle articulation.
Front suspension is a bit different, the front suspension are very limited regarding flex, this is limited by the IFS bumpstops, but because the Hilux & Fortuners are a bit known to drop lower in front, one can always fit a spacer to raise the vehicle again - or just fit a upgrade front coil.

There is two basic factors here..... pick the correct application for your vehicle...... and the last which I believe does matter almost more at the end of the day, the size of your wallet :-)
